Surjit Kaur Mahal

MAHAL--Surjit Kaur. It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Dr. Surjit Kaur Mahal (nee Kahlon) on March 7, 2026, at her home in Fremont, California, surrounded by her loved ones. She was 77 years old. Surjit was a cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, physician, confidant, and protector. She grew up in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, and led a life dedicated to her family and her profession. A graduate of Government Medical College, Patiala, Dr. Mahal came to the United States in 1973 and trained at Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus, New Jersey, and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California. She also served as a preceptor for the Primary Care Associate Program at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Mahal practiced medicine in Fremont, California for 46 years, serving her patients with empathy, compassion, and integrity. She will be deeply missed by her many devoted patients. Surjit lovingly raised her two wonderful children and, in more recent years, helped raise her three cherished grandchildren with love, laughter, and a guiding hand. As the foundation of our family, she leaves behind a legacy of personal strength and a deep belief in Waheguru and her Sikh faith. When she was not tending to her garden, reading on her Kindle, or taking long walks with her dogs, her kitchen was her comfort spot and a magnet for frequent family gatherings around her delicious meals. Surjit had the privilege of hosting President Bill Clinton for lunch at her home and was later invited to the White House Christmas Dinner in 2001, where she danced to the Marine Corps Band. Surjit is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Anmol Singh Mahal, with whom she shared a lifetime of love; her children Subena (Barrett) Kaur Tilley and Vikram Singh Mahal; and her beloved grandchildren Maya, Spencer, and Hanna, who adored her. She is also survived by her brother Narinder (Surjit) Singh Kahlon, sister Jashanjit (Baldev) Kaur Rai, brothers-in-law Pradeep (Mary) Singh Mahal and Sharan (Mona) Singh Mahal, dear friends Harmeet and Tripta Sachdev, and in-laws Steve and Merilyn Tilley. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grandnephews, as well as numerous friends who remember her fondly. She was predeceased by her brother Sukhjinder, her parents S. Gopal Singh Kahlon and Mrs. Gurbachan Kaur, and her parents-in-law Dr. Adarsh Singh Mahal and Mrs. Nasib Kaur. Cremation services for family only, will be held on March 14, 2026. Memorial services will be held at 965 Yakima Drive, Fremont, CA on Sunday, March 15, 2026, as follows: Path, Kirtan, and Ardas at 10:00am. Family eulogies at 11:30am.
