SUSAN HOCHBERG Obituary

HOCHBERG--Susan (Fine). Susan (Fine) Hochberg, of Manhattan, passed away November 28, 2025, she was 84. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, and longtime New Yorker, who reveled in all that the city had to offer. She was born Susan Ellen Fine, in Brooklyn, to first-generation Americans, Jack Fine and Fannie Altman Fine Epstein. Her parents were politically active, and Susan developed a deep sense of civic duty. She voted in every primary and election until her death. Susan graduated from high school in East Meadow, Long Island. She started college at Reed College in Portland, OR, and then returned to New York City to finish college and earn a MS in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from NYU. Susan worked as a rehabilitation counselor for the nonprofit Federation Employment & Guidance Service, and then for New York state's vocational rehabilitation services for people with disabilities. Susan never learned to drive, which wasn't a problem in the city, where she enjoyed the freedom that the public transportation system affords its residents. She took advantage of all New York City's cultural offerings, starting with the 1960s jazz scene. For decades, she spent her free time attending theater, opera, dance, concerts and visiting museums and galleries. Sometimes she saw two shows in one day. She learned where to get discount tickets, and attended open rehearsals, which meant she often got an early peek at shows. She started passing along recommendations to other arts lovers, that eventually turned into a blog she called "Sue's Reviews." Over the years, she developed a close group of theater and opera-going friends. Her survivors include her daughter Sarah (Hochberg) Luijpers, son-in-law Patrick Luijpers, grandchildren Arielle and Garrett Luijpers, sister Maxine Bochnia, and her niece Rachel Bochnia and nephew Michael Bochnia. With both her parents' remarriages, Susan gained new family members whom she embraced, and they also mourn her passing. Memorial service will be held January 10, 2026. Please reach out for details.

Yesterday

Sarah, I´m so deeply sorry to hear about your mom´s passing. I can hardly believe she´s gone. Susan was such a kind, warm, and genuine person. She touched so many lives with her compassion and strength. Please know that I´m thinking of you and your family during this heartbreaking time. I won´t be able to attend her memorial because I´m in PR for the winter season, however, she will be in my thoughts.
Regards,
Israel Cruz
