MARCUS--Sydney Lakow. Sydney Lakow Marcus passed away on Tuesday, June 14, at her home in Valhalla, NY, at the age of 98. She was born August 19, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY, where she lived with her parents, Mildred and Harry Lakow, and her brother Gerald. She attended New Utrecht High School, graduated from Brooklyn College, and received a master's degree from the School of Retailing at New York University. She later received a second master's degree in education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Sydney is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Michael) and Dr. Margaret Marcus, grandchildren Lucy (Richard), Ava (Connor), and Miranda (Andrew), and four great-grand- children, Jack, Rose, Levi, and Lulu. Sydney was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Leonard Marcus. Sydney passed away after living an incredibly joyous life. She taught for many years at Anne Hutchinson School in Eastchester, New York. She was a woman ahead of her times, acting as a fierce political advocate and as a supporter of Planned Parenthood and Meals on Wheels. She was an early member of the Westchester Reform Temple, attending services and working in the gift shop until she was in her mid-90s. Sydney was a voracious reader and volunteered at the Eastchester Public Library, a great lover of the arts with memberships at many New York City museums and theaters, and a world traveler with her husband, even participating in archeological digs. She made long lasting friends wherever she went ... traveling, teaching, in the neighborhood, vacationing in Longboat Key, and after moving to Valhalla from Eastchester. Sydney was admired and beloved by all who knew her and remained wickedly smart until the end of her days. She will be remembered for her zest for life, her intellectual curiosity, and her love and commitment to family. Donations in Sydney's memory can be made to Planned Parenthood.
