BARNETT--Dr. Tess Forrest, a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst and family therapist died suddenly on January 14th, 2009 in Sarasota, Florida, where she had retired from her private practice in Great Neck, New York. Dr. Forrest Barnett was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 14, 1922. Orphaned in childhood, she put herself through Brooklyn College and the Master's Program at Columbia University's Teacher's College. After earning her Ph.D. at Adelphi University and completing her post-doctoral training at the William Alanson White Institute, Dr. Forrest Barnett established a private practice in Great Neck, New York, and served on the teaching and supervisory faculties at William Alanson White, the New York University Post Doctoral Program, the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University and the Manhattan Institute in New York City. A pioneer in the field of family therapy at the Jewish Board of Family and Children Services in New York City, she taught and published numerous papers on the integration of individual psychoanalysis and family systems therapy, as well as on dreams. Along with her husband, Dr. Joseph Barnett, M.D., also a psychoanalyst, she taught at psychoanalytic institutes in Stockholm, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid. Dr. Forrest Barnett is survived by her children Roanne Barnett, Ph.D., Jonathan Barnett and her grandchildren Juliana Barnett Gildesgame, Ezra Barnett Gildesgame, Joseph David (J.D.) Barnett and Sarah Lauren Barnett. Services will be held on Monday, January 19th at 12:45pm at the Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street at Amsterdam Avenue, New York City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of one's choice or to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
