THOMAS GALLATIN Obituary

GALLATIN--Thomas Gerry, Jr. Thomas Gerry Gallatin Jr., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gallatin Sr. of Manhasset, NY, recently passed away aged 74 with his devoted wife Patricia by his side. Tom was born September 12, 1950 in Manhasset, NY. He attended the Brooks School in North Andover, MA and Princeton University, where he was a member of the Colonial Club, which is also where Pattie and Tom's love story began. They married in 1976, celebrating at the bride's parent's country club, The Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo Park, NY. Tom graduated from Syracuse University College of Law in 1977. He joined the firm Mudge, Rose, Guthrie, Alexander & Ferdon that same year, later becoming partner. He later joined Latham & Watkins as a partner where he represented multiple clients, including Nintendo, Sony and Toshiba. He was last with Toshiba America as Senior Vice President General Counsel. Tom was an avid and highly skilled yachtsman, having been a member of the New York Yacht Club, Port Washington Yacht Club, and Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, where he served on the Board of Trustees and as a member of the Race Committee. Tom was a descendant of Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury under President Thomas Jefferson and later Ambassador to France and England, and of Elbridge Gerry, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Governor of Massachusetts and Vice President of the United States under James Madison. Tom is survived by his wife Patricia and sister Jean Scatuorchio, and pre-deceased by his parents and sister Edith Egan. He is further survived by Patrick Scatuorchio, Emily Scatuorchio Snyder, Amanda Manganaro, Thomas Scatuorchio, Terence McSweeney, and Susan McSweeney-Cappello. Tom's intelligence, humor, warmth, dedication, generosity, and kindness touched everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered - always held in our hearts. A service will be held at Christ Church in Manhasset, 11am, on November 1.

"And because I love this life,
I know I shall love death as well.
The child cries out when from the right breast
The mother takes it away, in the next moment
To find in the left one its consolation."

Gitanjali, No. 95

Tom was my good friend and for two years a roommate at Princeton in 1969- 1971. He was a kind heart and an acute mind born into a very different world from mine - he from the New York social register and I a high schooler from Kentucky. I had the pleasure of meeting his wonderful and gracious parents during a visit to their home in Manhassett, Long Island. We had many conversations exploring the place of God in the crazy, broken world of the late 1960s, a time of great political ferment as well as theological exploration. Tom was a fan of the theologian Paul Tillich, and our chats turned me toward that great thinker and the relevance of existentialist models of finding one´s honest way amid so much chaos. Thanks for our precious times together, Tom, and may you rest in peace in the better place where you carry on. I send my condolences to you dear Patty. Gary

I competed ed Tom at Brooks School. I felt he was destined to do great things and when he got into Princeton I was impressed. He told me that I should have gone there because they had a building named after me. In retrospect maybe I should have because of Princeton´s theological program. Perhaps my own journey to God might have been successful earlier in my life. Also I think I could have made the basketball team at Princeton

May the God we served take care of his family and direct the Angels to bring him Home

Tom Gallatin was a loyal and loving friend of some 30 plus years. He was a man of honor and integrity and he selectively used his words with great impact for the betterment of those around him. We shared a common love for yachts and like most yachtsman, he was never shy to share a wonderful story of his time on the water. GOD Bless him. fair Winds and Following Seas!
