THOMAS HAINES Obituary

HAINES--Dr. Thomas H. The City College of New York mourns the passing of Dr. Thomas H. Haines, the distinguished alumnus and visionary behind the CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at his alma mater. He overcame a childhood in an orphanage and personal tragedies to become a prominent scientist, social activist, landlord, and educator. Dr. Haines earned BS and MS degrees from CCNY and received his PhD in chemistry from Rutgers University. A noted specialist in the study of lipids and biological membranes, he later taught biochemistry at CCNY for 35 years. His enormous contributions to CCNY led to the establishment of CSOM. For this, he was recognized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science for helping to educate minority and other disadvantaged students affordably. The City College is proud and privileged to have known Dr. Haines. Our hearts and condolences go out to his wife Polly and daughter Avril. Vincent Boudreau, President

There are few CCNY faculty who had the vision and soul for the enormous effort that went into creating the CUNY School of Medicine. From his humble beginnings as an orphan to the end of his life he was dedicated to seeing that students of color could have a dream that they could enter the health care profession. In my mind he was a giant in the field.
