THOMAS MABLEY Obituary

MABLEY--Thomas III. Thomas Mabley III, age 89, of Hudson, New York, died on August 12, 2022. Born in Newton, Kansas, Tom was always proud of his mid-western roots. He grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana where his father, Reverend Thomas Mabley II, was the rector at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. After graduating from Episcopal High School, Alexandria, VA, Tom attended the University of Pennsylvania where he was a member of the St. Elmo's fraternity and later graduated from Wabash College. After a short time living in Washington DC, Tom moved to New York City to pursue a career in advertising at J. Walter Thompson. He quickly rose through the ranks to become Creative Director and is most remembered for his work on the US Marines recruitment campaigns. Tom is responsible for famous taglines such as, "The Few. The Proud. The Marines.", and "The Marines are Looking for a Few Good Men". At Lord, Geller, Federico, Einstein, Tom was the creative mind behind the well-regarded campaign for IBM's first home computer featuring the iconic Little Tramp character played by Charlie Chaplin and the tagline, "A Tool for Modern Times." Tom also enjoyed the challenge of running his own shop, Doyle Graf Mabley, and finished his career at Foote, Cone & Belding in Philadelphia, PA. A stalwart resident of Hudson, NY for the past 45 years, Tom spent his golden years living there full-time and volunteering to create campaigns for the Hudson Fire Department ("Pride is Our Pay'') as well as for the Quadricentennial celebration of Henry Hudson's river voyage. Tom adored visits from his four grandchildren and especially looked forward to hosting Thanksgiving at his home. In all his endeavours, Tom Mabley valued family, attention to detail, good design, a story well told, and most importantly, enjoying the moment. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine K. Mabley of Hudson, New York, two daughters from his first marriage to Cary Marvel Mabley, Winifred Marvel Mabley (Michael Ludwig) of New York City and Jennifer Mabley Handler (Austin) of Watermill, New York, former son-in-law, Benjamin I. Goldhagen, and four adoring grandchildren, Thomas M. Goldhagen, Elizabeth M. Goldhagen, Colin W. Handler, and Wesley M. Handler. I met Tom years ago back in the 80s at the beginning of my career. He was a kind, decent soul who made an impression on me. I'm glad to see he lived a full life. May he rest in peace.

Tom was a wonderful person. I remember when he bought the house in Hudson and he was fixing it up. RIP

I was a childhood school friend while attending ISTC Laboratory School in Terre Haute IN from grade school through High School. He was fun and enjoyed teasing me. I will be 90 in 2023. So happy he had a long and amazing life. He would laugh if he knew I married my high school sweetheart and we had. Seven children. God Bless!

After I read Tom´s aptly dignified obituary and Patti Harney´s moving online tribute to Tom, "What I can tell you about the man who wrote "a few good men," I discovered the information that the mother of Tom´s daughters Winnie and Jennifer also died this year. I´m very sorry for their losses and also send heartfelt condolences to everyone who had the good fortune to work with Tom and those of us who have shared in the immense pleasure of knowing him.

I remember Tom sitting on the window seat at the St. Elmo Club (U. of P.) playing the guitar & singing "Wabash Cannonball".

So sad to read of Tom's passing. Great guy! Remembering many fun times with him during our St. Elmo days at Penn and carousing at The Guards in Washington. Sorry we lost contact in later years, especially since we both ended up in NY.

He inspired, provoked, and taught - a wonderful and memorable friend and boss- lots of Labatts and laughs. I will never forget his breakfast visits with his daughters to our home in Hastings, on their way to Hudson.
