Thomas Spang Obituary

SPANG--Thomas J.G., avid outdoorsman, died at home in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA on February 28, 2009. Born in Chicago on January 31, 1929, he and his family moved to Massachusetts in 1938. Tom attended Dexter School and Milton Academy ('47) where he later co-founded the Korean War Memorial Scholarship, given to a student from a developing country, in memory of his classmates who lost their lives. Summers, Tom attended Camp Wabun in Canada, where he discovered his lifelong love: the great outdoors. After Harvard ('51) he took a post at General Motors before moving to France to work for the Paris Review. From there, he hitchhiked around the world as a stringer for the Boston Globe. Tom then took a position at the Gillette Company in London, where he met his wife Caroline, and later with Morgan Guaranty Trust in New York City, which sent him to Madrid. After three years, he returned to New York with his wife, two daughters and 50 cases of wine. They moved to Manchester in 1968, so Tom could pursue his love of writing between posts in Africa and Central America with United Nations Development Programme. He then founded Gametrails Limited, where he was able to combine his love of writing with his love of adventure, exploring the world for the best wing shooting, fly fishing and local eateries. He spent summers at his camp in Quebec, where he and Caroline taught their three children how to do the J stroke, portage a canoe, and cast a fly. Tom is survived by Caroline, daughters Charlotte and Vanessa, son Thomas, five grandchildren, his brother Joseph Peter Spang III, and his dog Binti. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11:30am at Milton Academy's Apthorp Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Korean War Memorial Scholarship Fund, Milton Academy, 170 Centre St, Milton, MA 02186 or the Essex County Greenbelt, 82 Eastern Avenue, Essex, MA 01929. Services by Campbell-Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly. Information, directions, condolences at: www.campbellfuneral.com

Cousin Tom was a great companion and always a welcome sight at family gatherings. His life was inspirational in scope: journalist, financier, adventurer, and fly-fisher...to name a few of his many avocations. Our love and sympathy to Tom's wonderful family.

Tom was a "caring stickler",insisting on one's ability to "know",and not to "think"; to find any errors in any writings. Tom could be gentle in his thoughts, but he was demanding in his character, and minced no words. In my working as Tom's assistant in Game Trails, I was given the task for years to be able to have the "grasshopper mind" on which he insisted, on my having charge over 6 countries. It was an experience of learning, and one that I would not have missed. I still have the feathers of a pheasant that he gave me, and intend to paint. Love and sympathy to Caroline and family.

It was a privilege to have known and love Mr. Spang. I will always treasure our time together and I am forever thankful that we found each other in this lifetime.
