TRAVIS EPES Obituary

EPES--Travis Francis, 88, of New York City, NY, passed away on June 12, 2024. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, devoted to his family. Travis was a brilliant mind, skilled lawyer, and intellectually curious. He was always reading, remained athletic into his later years, and was known for his kindness and wit. Travis is survived by his wife Jean, sons Travis and Chris, daughters-in-law Laurie and Sandra, grandchildren Jeffrey, Robert, Katherine, Christopher and Elizabeth, as well as many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father William Robinson Epes, mother Alice Madigan Epes, brother William Epes, and sisters Mary Epes, Jacquelyn Walsh, and Virginia Dwyer. Travis attended Iona Prep for high school, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science at Manhattan College and his law degree at NYU School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review and Order of the Coif. Travis had a successful career as a tax and securities law attorney at Cahill Gordon & Reindel, later joining Consolidated Edison, eventually becoming Associate General Counsel there. In his free time, Travis loved playing tennis and sailing. Travis served as president of Fieldston Property Owners Association for many years. He was a student of history throughout his life. A private celebration of his life will be held by his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Travis Epes.

To Jean and the family: I only today learned of the death of Travis, now one year ago!! I am so sorry to learn this sad news! Somehow our families lost contact after Mary's death. I deeply regret that loss! Mary and I were 'soul' sisters in many ways, and I adored Ginny. They were both so lovely. We had a special place in each others' hearts. I so loved Travis the few times we were together in either Yonkers or Blackstone. It was very exciting to have a 'yankee' cousin!! Then I left the south and married a Canadian! I don't know how to reach you, Jean, but would love to connect. Please be in touch if you can at [email protected]. (I've lived in Canada since 1961!) I'm one year older than Travis so will turn 90 next month!! My brother Campbell died 4 1/2 years ago (Oct, 2020) but there are still at least two other 1st cousins still with us (Alice and Jacqueline - Uncle Edward's). Hoping to hear from you or your Travis or Chris. My Uncle Will and Aunt Alice were absolutely my favorite of all that generation. I should tell you that my brother did an enormous amount of genealogical work on the Epes family, and I am trying to keep it up as long as I can. In sadness, 'Geegee' (Virginia Lee Epes Mills)
