Vartan Gregorian taught me European Intellectual History at Penn. He was one of the most influential persons in my life in that his course sparked a lifelong interest in the history of philosophy. He was a great scholar and teacher, as well as a kind and thoughtful person. I cannot thank him enough.

My friendship with him began in 1970 when I was a graduate student and continued through the decades as we became university administrators and colleagues in philanthropy.
