VINCENT JOYNER Obituary

JOYNER--Vincent. We are heartbroken to share the news that Vincent Joyner, of Mt. Vernon, NY, has died. Born and raised in the Bronx, Vinnie (or VJ to some) attended Christopher Columbus High School where he fostered his life's passion: sports. Vinnie could throw a football 80 yards and knock a baseball out of the park. But his true love was basketball. Those that first saw him on those massive courts described him as a kid that could jump to the moon, but a devastating knee injury in high school robbed Vinnie of his incredible leaping ability and a surefire NBA career. After the injury, still able to dunk, Vinnie re-invented himself as a powerful low-post player with soft hands who could step outside with infinite shooting range. Vinnie played College Basketball at the Fashion Institute of Technology and later, in 1979, had a tryout with the Knicks. Scrimmaging with Bill Cartwright on his side, Vinnie outplayed the Knicks' first round draft pick Sylvester "Sly" Williams. Though Willis Reed was impressed, the organization wasn't inclined to cut someone with a guaranteed contract to make room for a then older player. What was the NBA's loss, was an incredible gain for anyone who had an opportunity to play with Vinnie in local leagues in Westchester and the Bronx. He was a truly special player. Vinnie was always looking for a good run and his relationships formed through the love of the game stood the test of time. Going back to pickup games at Christopher Columbus High School, to his time playing in the New Rochelle Winter and Greenburgh Summer Leagues, his friendships endured. He stayed close with members of The Lords, his Rec League Team. Vinnie and The Lords were two time, back-to-back New Rochelle League Champions, and though not one person on the team actually lived in New Rochelle, they managed to "borrow" driver's licenses and "prove" eligibility in order to compete in what was the most elite winter league in the area. They were asked not to return the following year to attempt the threepeat. Vinnie kept in touch with the team, keeping alive the love they all shared playing in the Greenburgh gym for summer league; with an air-conditioning system that was always sure to break, and where multiple NBA players also competed. A fantastic dresser, Vinnie had style off the court as well. He was a beloved security guard at Costco, a decent cook who enjoyed excellent food, and was deeply devoted to his parents, who preceded him in death. He was generous with his time and loved sharing his encyclopedic knowledge of sports and life during weekly meet ups with friends at the Barnes and Noble on Central Avenue in Yonkers. He found unique ways of communicating with all those he loved, whether it be hours long phone calls, or emoji and photo filled messages to the great delight of whoever was lucky enough to be on the receiving end. Vinnie leaves behind a daughter, Stephanie, and a legion of friends. Pete and Debra Scagnelli, Joe Martino, Joanne Martino, Lloyd Rubin, Rodney Mon, Steve Greenberg, Billy Gould, Lori Badman, Leo Borenstein, Sam Borenstein, Neal Petutsky, Henry Braverman, Noel Intner, Kurt Woodley, John Mendell, Steve Watts, Richard Finkelstein and Janice Rubin, Laura and Johnathan McClain, and Daniel Finkelstein all mourn this devastating loss. Vinnie's smile was as big and open as his heart. We will miss him and his incredible, enveloping hugs forever. One more game.

It has been more than 50 years since I saw Vinnie. But, from the comments, I knew that he was unforgettable. We played Pel Pkwy Little League baseball ( Pirates) together at the age of 12. Vinnie was one of our best. Fastest man in the league. But nothing was brighter than his attitude or his smile. Rest assured, I never forgot you old friend.

Growing up in the Projects I got to know Vinny as I played many a football, basketball and softball game with and against him in the CCHS schoolyard. He was like an added coach on the field and pushed me to use my speed to my advantage! I lost track with Vinny after the CCHS schoolyard was renovated and I went off to college but I never forgot the Big Guy! May he RIP knowing all the people he touched in the most positive way!

I just found out about Vinny's passing yesterday! I was so heartbroken. He was a gentleman and a scholar; always greeted every person who passed through those doors a Costco with a smile. He made a big difference; his smile and greeting set the tone in the store. Everyone who entered Costco had been touched by Vinny, I must say that finding a replacement will not be easy. However, one thing I know as a minister that when he got to heaven, God gave him the greeting of the universe, "Well done, good and faithful servant- Welcome to heaven!"

Just found out August 2020. Vinny was a wonderful human being, an exceptional athletic talent and always competitive in any sport. Had the pleasure of playing many, many Columbus High weekend basketball and touch football games with Vinny and the crew there in the 80s. These are cherished memories. RIP brother.

My family and I have been regular Costco shoppers for many years. Almost everything in our house comes from the Yonkers warehouse. My mood will never be the same as I enter the store because no one is going so say "Hey Mama, how you doin'" to me and give me a bear hug. His voice had such a kind and genuine tone. I'll never forget it.
Vinny watched my kids grow up. They used to sit in the cart when I walked in. Now they are in college. He always asked how we were and I would always ask how he's doing, especially when I could see he was not feeling his best. We would talk about what he's doing to take care of himself.
We saw the posting of his death in a local facebook group. Vinny was famous in the Costco world to thousands of people and I've learned so much more about him from the incredibly amazing tribute written about him as his obituary. We miss him so much. Our most sincere condolences to all who loved him and we all hope for a swift treatment/vaccine for this horrible virus.

There were days where I really didn't want to be at work. Walking in to Costco 321 sometimes felt like a daunting, draining task. Vinnie used to always put a smile on my face as I walked in to the vestibule. Everytime he saw me he would say "wassup girlfriend?!", pound my fist and blow it up with the sound effect to match LOL. He was pure joy and a ray of sunshine in costco. Always happy, always positive, and always made me feel like I was going to have a good day even if I felt otherwise. Vinnie was one of those people who just knew how to make people feel welcomed and included. I always loved how he never paid attention to/gave in to negativity. People could say whatever and do whatever and he would never let anyone disturb his peace. He was kind, patient, warm, and a true pleasure to be around. I will never forget him. Love you Vinnie!

Hey Yogi Bear it's me BooBoo I cried like a baby when I got the news about your passing. To me Mr.Vinny was more like my family then just a co worker! I've known him for 15yrs. Everyday while at work he would call me over to him and say BooBoo can you please go get me a cherry coke or when's the next time you going to bring me some Popeyes Chicken and my reply would always be Yogi you don't need to be drinking that or eating that and he would say it's ok because I drink 3 waters so I'll be ok don't worry and nothing will stop me from eating my Popeyes and he would do a little dance. I'm going to miss that
smile and that laugh. He had the biggest heart and he was like a GIANT teddy bear. I'm going to miss you so much S.I.P Yogi Bear now you can have all the Cherry Cokes and Popeyes your heart desires! Love you big guy!

I worked with Vinny at PS 26 in the Bronx in the early 80s. Vinnie was always there to lend a helping hand and a listening ear when I needed him. He was a gentle giant, a wonderful human being, and a gentleman. I saw him in Costco in January and we were reminiscing about years passed and he was looking forward to his retirement. I saw him again at my birthday dinner at a restaurant and he was sitting having his dinner and watching sports on the big screen. Vinnie would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. I am so very sad that our rekindled friendship was cut short. Rest in peace big man. You will be missed by many.
