VIVIANE RYAN Obituary

RYAN--Dr. Viviane Ohayon The Yeshiva University and Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) family is profoundly saddened by the passing of Dr. Viviane Ohayon Ryan, the beloved wife of the late Tomas L. Ryan, was a member of the Sephardic Council of Overseers and a Trustee of the Maybaum Brothers Memorial Fellowships Committee which provides grants to Sephardic rabbinic students at the university's affiliated RIETS and sustains the Maxwell R. Maybaum Chair in Talmud and Sephardic Codes (Halakha). Dr. Ryan was an Ayshet Hayil, a woman of many great accomplishments who was widely admired by all who knew her for her wisdom, compassion and dedication to her family. Heartfelt condolences are extended to the devoted Ryan children, Gabriela and Tomas, and to her siblings, Rabbi Joseph Ohayon, Solange Ohayon, Marcelle Sarubbi and Marie Rogowski. May the entire family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Min Hashamayim Tenuhamu. Richard M. Joel, President Norman Lamm, Chancellor and Rosh Hayeshiva

I met Viviane Ohayon in 1964. I was a Freshman at NYU. As a French professor, she never awarded me more than a B+. She was honest! As a person, she was the most supportive, personable, kind, natural, unpretentious and inspiring teacher I ever had. Perhaps she was sensitive to the pain and confusion I felt having so recently lost my father; perhaps she saw a light in me I had not yet seen. Whatever her impulse, Viviane extended occasional invitations to me to join her for a coffee and chat at her Washington Mews quarters at the NYU downtown campus. Whatever attendant self importance I felt at those times was dwarfed by Viviane's gracious acceptance of me and her capacity to transcend her official pedagogical role: she was the only adult--other than my grieving and contentious mother--with whom I felt at ease to be myself. Viviane's trust and confidence in me led her to share Solange's contact in Casa Blanca where my wife and I attended an unforgettable Passover Seder. I have carried my memory--the memory--of Viviane in my heart all my life. Through the simplicity and sincerity of my all-too-scant encounters with her, I have been forever touched by her humor, her caring, her intelligence, her good will. I am sorry to have missed seeing her later in my life, and I am sorry for the loss her passing represents to all family and those who worked closely with her. Viviane was a blessing in my life.
