Warren Ilchman Obituary

ILCHMAN--Warren F. Warren Frederick Ilchman, 91, died at home in Bronxville, NY, on November 21, 2024. Born in Denver, Warren was the husband of the late Alice Stone Ilchman, parent to Frederick and Sarah, father-in- law to Cassandra and Jacob, and grandfather to Ilaria and Alice. Warren was educated at Brown University (BA) and the University of Cambridge (PhD), where he held a Marshall Scholarship. He taught at Williams College and the University of California, Berkeley, receiving a Fulbright to India. He authored, co-authored, or edited seventeen books. His career in university administration began as Dean at Boston University and culminated as President of Pratt Institute. His work in philanthropy included Asia Advisor to the Ford Foundation, Director of the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, and founding Director of the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. Proud mentor to many, he was an early advocate for women leaders, starting with his wife. His enthusiasms extended to his granddaughters, neckties, art exhibitions, and exploring every corner of Manhattan. He relished conversation and encouraged all to compose a life of Hope, Purpose, and Meaning. Memorial gifts may be made to Christ Church, 17 Sagamore Road and to Gramatan Village, 85 Pondfield Road, Bronxville, New York 10708.

Peter S. Glick, former student and author of Finding Father, Vietnam Fifty

July 16, 2025

I first encountered Prof. Ilchman as a junior at Williams in 1960, a student in his constitutional law course. We got along well and there was a personal as well as student-teacher relationship between us. I stopped to see him at Berkeley a few years later, when I was on my way to service in Vietnam. He worried a bit about me and wished me well, noting that I was embarking on a fascinating life that he did not foresee for me during our Williams association. I have not thought of him for many years but did today (7/16/2024) and hoped he might still be alive so I could tell him how much I appreciated his teaching and friendship and also that I had written a book on my Vietnam experiences and life. He has passed, and I have, most sadly, missed that chance. So, I add my admiration for him to this memory book and send best wishes to his children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful man. Sincerely, Peter S. Glick

Warren was an absolutely lovely man, a true gentleman in the best sense of that word. I so enjoyed knowing him while I was employed at George Soros's Open Society Foundations. Warren was totally devoted to his wife Alice, and living the last part of his life without her must have been so difficult. He was the perfect person to be founding Director of the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, as Warren loved interacting with all those brilliant young people, and they with him. A life extremely well lived.

I , and many of my classmates from Williams, were greatly impacted by Warren Ilchman. Indeed, about 7 of us have commented in our Class Notes about Warren's teaching as well as his many kindnesses. As a teacher, he was profound , demanding and exquistly prepared. Indeed, Professor Ilchman was the best teacher I ever had and I have a BA, MBA and PhD. He was quite extraordinary.

One of my fondest memories was our Junto group in Bronxville was when i would give Warren a ride home and he would talk about his devotion to hope purpose and meaning including the plaque his children gave him when he retired. A life well lived and a man and friend
well respected. Rest in Peace Warren

It was clear that Warren was devoted to Alice and I have always been so sorry that she passed away too soon. Now they are together again. God Bless them

I'm remembering our many conversations over breakfast in Bronxville while I was working at Sarah Lawrence College. He was warm, witty, and always wanting to help our students and faculty. I'm not surprised to see that Hope, Purpose, and Meaning were his guiding principles. A fine man, may he rest in peace.
