WILLIAM BARRETT Obituary

BARRETT--William Riker, Jr. William R. Barrett Jr, age 80, died peacefully on December 26, 2022. Bill was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, successful banker, woodworking master, and puzzle expert. While he spent much of his free time in his woodworking shop, he most enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, reading mystery and sci-fi novels, and playing his guitar. Bill grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey and was a proud graduate of Choate and Princeton University. Following his graduation, he began a fulfilling career in New York City at JP Morgan that lasted 33 years, including two extended overseas assignments in London and Tokyo. Following his retirement, he moved to Brays Island in Sheldon, SC, but remained active in banking, serving on the board of Morgan Stanley Private Bank. An accomplished woodworker, Bill built beautiful furniture in his expertly-outfitted workshop. His signature accomplishments included a dollhouse of the family's home in London, as well as wedding gifts made for every niece, nephew and close friend of the family. He also enjoyed puzzles and games of all kinds, never missing a crossword, jumble, or trick in Hearts. Bill was the beloved husband of Penny Barrett. The couple were married for 56 years and knew each other their entire lives. Bill is also survived by his daughter Campbell, son Ben, in-laws Knut and Sarah as well as his five loving grandchildren, Oscar, Mia and Cecilia Hellandsvik and Eliza and Willa Barrett. He is also survived by his siblings Pete, Bruce and Tony Barrett. A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 7th, 2023 at 2:30pm at Brays Island in Sheldon, SC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Coastal Conservation League.

As Bill's neighbor at Bill's Barn I had the opportunity to peek into what made up this remarkable man. I always stood in awe of Bill as I witnessed him going thru his weekly task. He took as much pleasure (he planted numerous ornamental shrubs & flowers there that continue to contribute to his memory) in doing the
mundane necessary task of maintaining his barn property as he did in finishing a complicated piece of woodwork. He could have hired the maintenance out but chose not to. Bill Barrette is not really gone....he is in everything that he left behind for us all. Woody & Lynn Collins

Penny,
I am so sorry for your loss. Flooding memories of our great friends in those teenage, wonderful years overwhelm me. Bill was such a remarkable person. Truly a wonderful person we all respected and admired.
Penny, I am thinking of you and your family and know this is so sad and tragic. Hard to really believe. Our gang always at your house, always doing something on the edge. But Bill was the straight and true one. You married an exceptional man. How many ever knew their spouse their entire life!
Know I am thinking of you and your family.
Love
Bunny!
