WILLIAM L. CHAMBERS II

CHAMBERS--William L., II, William L. Chambers II, 82 years old, died on May 4 in Palm Beach Gardens Hospital, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He died after being in a coma for 27 days following emergency heart surgery. A native New Yorker, he lived for the last seven years in Jupiter, FL. Bill, a longtime employee of the New York Times, spent many of his 46 years with the company as an editor on the news makeup desk. A skilled editor, he handled deadline pressure with a cool calmness yet possessed a warm sense of humor that endeared him to many. In a newsroom where rumpled shirts were the fashion norm, he always stood out in his impeccable jacket, shirt and tie. He once told a colleague that early in his career he was hired for a job in the publisher's office because he was the only one wearing a suit. He enjoyed life to the fullest and always looked forward to his next adventure. His friends and family will miss him deeply. Survivors include his son, Geoffrey C. Chambers, Sr. and daughter-in-law, Ellen, of Bluemont, VA; his son, Matthew C. Chambers and his partner, William E. Davis, of Jupiter; his grandson, Geoffrey C. Chambers, Jr. of Arlington, VA; and numerous cousins. He is also survived by Catherine Kelly Chambers, of Queens, NY and Flerida Orozco, of Jupiter. He was predeceased by his beloved son, William L. Chambers III; his mother, Margaret and sisters Dorothy and Gloria. A wake will be held Sunday, 2 to 5pm and 7 to 9pm and on Monday, 2 to 5pm at Papavero Funeral Home, 72-27 Grand Avenue, Maspeth, Queens; an evening service will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 7 to 9. Burial at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, Long Island, will follow a gravesite service on Tuesday at 11am.
