SOLOMON-- William Barney. Of Manhattan, May 20, 1951 to April 8, 2020. Loved by his wife Terry, his daughter Sophie (Brandon), and son Daniel, whom he cherished above all. He is also survived by his brother Bob (Marge), sister Judy, and three nephews, Philip, David, and Stephen. Born to Dr. Nathan and Florence (Schneider) Solomon, Bill graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia P&S. He went on to a distinguished career as an NIH grant recipient at Harvard/MIT, where his research resulted in a gene therapy patent for the iron deficient and became a tenured professor of hematology/oncology at Downstate Medical School and attending physician at Maimonides Hospital. A compassionate healer, esteemed mentor, talented photographer, wide reader, he enjoyed his membership at the Park Avenue Synagogue, the ballet, biking in Central Park and dining with friends, who valued his wit, insight, caring ear and encouragement. He died at home, suddenly, holding the hand of his wife of 34 years, leaving us too soon. Please consider donations to the Central Park Conservancy.

Deepest condolences to Terry, Brandon and Daniel. Dr Solomon was my mentor and I discovered this tragic news interviewing another doctor who also was mentored by Bill. There is a metamorphosis. I’m never going to be like my parents. I can’t believe I’m becoming my parents. I’m proud to be like my parents. And that is how my last conversation ended with Bill. (As was always the case) “Eric I’m very proud of you”. RIP Bill. Tikun Olam. The world is a better place because of the healers you have mentored.

I am so heartbroken to hear Dr. Solomon no longer with us. I met him in 2014 when I was 1st diagnosed with lymphoma. I knew I was blessed when he became my doctor. His wit, humor, compassion, and discernment helped me through such a challenging time in my life. 7 years later, I am cancer-free and I'm so sad I never had to chance to really thank him like I wanted to. He saved my life and I will always be grateful to him.

Dr. Solomon was a gentleman and a scholar. He was on my thesis committee, seamlessly traversed the medical and basic science fields, and was highly regarded by his peers. He was very supportive during my time at SUNY Downstate and will be missed by the many clinicians and patients fortunate to have known him.

Thank you for saving my mothers life when she was diagnosed with cancer and when I was a baby. There are no words to express how grateful I am for you and how much I cherish you in my heart. You are my hero and especially my mothers hero, without you my mom wouldnt have seen me grow up & she wouldnt have the opportunity to raise me. She wouldnt be able to see her only family member graduate and reach different stages of her life. I will always look up to you and I aspire to be exactly like you when I become a physician. You are a LEGEND! All my condolences go out to your family and I pray for each and everyone of your family members.

I am deeply saddened by this news and want to express my condolences. I did not know Dr. Solomon well, but I have a brief story to share. Dr. Solomon met my parents when he stayed at their inn in Concord, MA. I was applying to medical school at the time and was waitlisted at Columbia P&S. After talking with my mother, Dr. Solomon got me an interview with the dean of admissions, Dr. Frantz, and I was taken off the waitlist. I am now more than 10 years into my medical career and I often think of Dr. Solomon and his generosity.

I am saddened by the sudden passing of Dr. Solomon. He was funny, compassionate, empathetic, understanding, brilliant, witty, friendly, and honest. I learned plenty from Dr. Solomon in these five years as my physician and mentor. He was excellent in his career. I witnessed a man who took great care of his patients, students, and colleagues alike. Solomon would lecture me at every appointment like a dad lol, but its because he cared so deeply not only about my health status, but also navigating life as a young woman. Im so grateful I had the opportunity to meet him. Ms. Velta Willis, I am so sorry again. Condolences to his family, close friends, and colleagues of Dr. Solomons during this hard time. May he Rest In Peace

To Terry and the rest of the Solomon family. I made a mistake in the end of my previous sign in on April 17, 2020. I wrote may "he" be comforted when I meant to say may "you" be comforted. His place in heaven is assured and it is we the living who need the comfort. Please call or write to me if I can be of any additional comfort as minimally a supportive listener. With Love,

I met Dr. Solomon in the emergency room at Maimonides in January - my Mom was gravely ill and recently diagnosed with stage IV Lymphoma. Words cannot express what Dr. Solomon did for us, and how he saved my Mom's life. She was on a ventilator for over a week, bed ridden and couldn't even walk. She walked into the Cancer Center last Friday and couldn't wait to show him her progress. To say we are heartbroken is an understatement. We will hold Dr. Solomon in our hearts forever and be forever grateful for all he did for us. We have no doubt that he will live on in all the research that he has done and all the lives that he has touched. May God Bless his Soul and comfort his family during this difficult time.

Dr. Solomon was instrumental in saving my life from cancer in 2015. In spite of no longer being my doctor when my wife and I moved to Israel, he would still immediately answer emails sent to him by me with questions relating to my recurring cancer. In the hospital he met and warmly engaged with my mother of 87 yo and my daughter, went to any length to be of service, and together with his other members at Maimonides hospital, especially Velta Willis were truly amazing. He encouraged our Aliyah to Israel by saying "go ahead...live your life...May his bereaved family heal through his tragic loss, knowing that his soul is being securely guarded up above and G-d willing in the very near future will return to us at the time of the Moshiach!
My wife and I share your pain and pray for a quick healing. May he be comforted with the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
With deepest love,

Bill was a brilliant and compassionate doctor and scientist, a role model, a leader. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with him at Downstate, we all benefitted greatly from his wisdom, thoughtful insights, and care for us as individuals and for our mission as researchers. I had the distinct privilege to work with him as a scientific advisor for my graduate students and host his resident in my lab. We are deeply saddened by his loss, and express heartfelt condolences to the Solomon family.

Dr Solomon was a compassionate, funny, kind and brilliant human being and a great teacher and mentor. Over the years he also became a dear friend. He arrived to heal not only through his hands and medical care but by his sunny disposition and cheerful talk. He led by example and took care of his students, patients and colleagues alike with equanimous good Will. Always ready for a quick chat or a word of encouragement, always saying work hard but take care of yourself and loved ones too, lighting up as he spoke of basic science but able to talk about anything under the sun with finesse, he was deeply loved and cherished and will be alive forever in our hearts. His students will be his legacy taking his work forward.

Dr Wiiam Solomon was a warm intelligent and supportive colleague in our community based efforts to establish a clinical trial in substituting Opioids as potent analgesics with Medical marijuana. As an Oncologist he was a pioneer in defining an individual approach when presented with a seemingly complex issue. The patients trusted him. As a community based Family Physician I saw Dr Solomon (Bill) as a role model and respected him as a guide within the complex organizations that today defines health care. Too few individuals stand out as leaders. Too few succeed. Respectfully....Dr George Moskowitz Family Physician
