JAMES STEWART Obituary

JAMES HOWARD STEWART, III James Howard Stewart, III, was born in Anniston, AL on August 31, 1961. He is survived by his father, James Howard Stewart, Jr. and wife, Zula Stewart; and mother, Rebecca Brown Stewart, sister, Alice Ann Stewart, brother, David Stewart, sister, Deborah Stewart Yim and husband, Michael Yim, stepbrother, Richard Alverson, stepsister, Debbie LaRussa, stepbrother, Steve McConnell; nieces and nephews, Taylor LaRussa, Patrick Yim, Jacob Boone, Leah LaRussa, Joshua Boone, Daniel Yim. He is also survived by uncles and aunts, Dr. and Mrs. Ronald Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stewart, and Jane Stewart Griffin and 6 cousins and 8 second cousins. Although Jimmy had no children of his own, he was a like a father to Calvin, Taylor and Samantha Bond after the untimely death of their beloved father Chris and also to DaShan and Dawan Simpson, and William Strickland. Jimmy, a 1983 graduate of Auburn University and a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity, was a retired sales executive with the Savin Corporation and resided in Auburn, Alabama. He dedicated his life in service to others through his work with the Boy Scouts of America and the Umbrella Foundation, Inc, where he was the Founder, Chairman and CEO of this 501(3)(c) Corporation dedicated to serving at risk youth. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America as both a youth member and then as an adult leader. He was an Eagle Scout and a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. He served as a cub scout leader and for seven years as Scoutmaster of Troop 87 in Roswell, GA. In addition he served as District Commissioner for the North Fulton and Chattahoochee Boy Scout districts and was head of the Order of the Arrow cook team. He was the recipient of many of Scouting's most prestigious awards including the Silver Beaver Award, the Whitney M. Young Service award presented by the National Headquarters, the James E West Fellowship, and a host of other awards recognizing his dedication to youth. He received many training awards including Wood Badge and served for many years as an active trainer. Most recently Jimmy served as a leader for the Tiger Cubs in Auburn and loved helping the youngest members as they began their own path in scouting. He was most proud of the 27 young men who earned the Eagle Scout rank during his time as Scoutmaster. His mentoring of troubled and at risk youth resulted in many of the youth under his direction developing into strong young men of character. Jimmy was a dedicated and passionate fan of the Auburn University Football Team and could be found faithfully cheering on the Tigers every Fall from his regular seat in the stadium. Jimmy was also the founder of a large tailgating organization in Auburn called Magnolia Tent Village where he was affectionately known as "The Mayor". Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 pm at the First United Methodist Church of Anniston with Rev. Pete Hawker, Rev. Kevin Hobbs, Frank Tighe and Rev. Minnie Stovall officiating. Burial will follow at Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 - 2 pm at the church. Pallbearers will be Frank Tighe, Frank Zimmerr, Steve Cleary, Dave Rigsby, Scott Thompson, Greg Baker, Col. Tim Sullivan and Col. Mark Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made to Boy Scout Troop 87, Roswell, Presbyterian Church, 755 Mimosa Blvd., Roswell, GA 30075. Jimbob - oh how I miss your energy, enthusiasm, joy of all things Auburn .
I miss our talks, gatherings, your friends.....the away game parties.
I always left your presence feeling better about myself because you had a way of building people up.
Such a southern gentleman, who loved tradition and honor!
Today I raise a Budweiser and a jack & coke (with just a splash of coke) to you and the many great memories. We are better people because you crossed our path in life. Miss you so very much my friend!
Hold my spot until we meet again. I have so much to tell you and hear from you!
You were/are, a friend, mentor, neighbor, but most of all - one of the greatest people I´ve ever met.
Thinking of all the fun we had!
Oh what great thoughts.....my friend!

I can't begin to imagine the many times I will miss seeing Jimmy's smile and hearing his laughter. He was the geniune article. I loved hearing about his many Chuck Taylor shoes, special favorite of mine being the red & white checker-board with bacon racing stripes and the fried egg where the Chuck Taylor logo should be. Or his contagious laughter when telling a story that had everyone in tears. Or him yelling "hot trays" while moving food to the serving line at OA events. Or my absolute favorite thing he ever said to me at Powderhorn Training, it had been a full day and we were all winding down in our separate tents and chatting and laughing and Jimmy says "Well, it's been a good day and we did a lot of fun stuff but it's time to go to sleep now." I know that was his polite way of saying "shhh!" I chuckle thinking about if he tries to say that in heaven, they'll probably grin too! May God always bless your family with the comfort of knowing you are the genuine article. I miss you Jimmy... we all do!

It seems that for some, the time they spend on Earth is to be a light for others, lighting the path ahead. Not Jimmy. He was a LIGHTHOUSE. That light remains lit in the hearts and minds of countless boys, young men, and adults, and will continue to shine in ways even Jimmy could not have imagined. Thank you, JimBob, for being a shining example of a life well-lived with purpose and integrity. The Great Scoutmaster has just strengthened His team.

Jimmy you inspired us all. Your leadership, humor and your dedication to "all that is scouting" led many of us to go farther than we ever imagined in the BSA. You have touched thousands of lives through the BSA. The only thing we all can ever hope to do in our lives is to make a difference, and my dear fellow Woodbadge Owl, you CERTAINLY made a difference. My son was inspired to attain his Eagle rank in part because of all the FOS presentations he did with me, when he stood on stage telling everyone at age 11 that he was going to be an Eagle, and that sure helped the donations come in too! (Thanks for "persuading" me to do that job.) And because you also "persuaded" me to complete my Woodbadge ticket, my son KNEW he had to earn his Eagle rank, just to make sure his mom didn't outdo him in the BSA. Today, he is 21 and very thankful for all that being an Eagle Scout has brought to him in his young life. Thanks for all you did for your friends in scouting, and for making us all feel like family. You will be missed so greatly, by so many.

Deepest sympathies to the Stewart family,

I just wanted to let you know that your family is in my prayers. JimBob was a fun fellow Auburn alum who I saw frequently at tailgates in Auburn at home football games. My sister is the daughter in law of one of JimBob's best AU friends (Dorhn) and we tailgated at times with them all at Stadium Way in Auburn. JimBob fed us fabulous soup after one of the games last fall and opened his condo to us all to talk Auburn football after the AU/ua loss this last year.
I know AU tailgating will never be the same. I'll miss his hearty, congenial nature, long AU coat, truck bed full of AU tigers he'd collected and chatting about AU football.

There are no words to this loss to so many people. I hope all are consoled by knowing all the good that was done in his memorable life and that he lived every minute of it. bg

Sandra and I send our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to all of Jimmy's family. I knew Jimmy most of my life. In high school Jimmy was a great influence to anyone who knew him. Nothing has been mentioned about this, as of yet, but Jimmy as many know, was a great musician. We spent many hours together as members of AHS band where we learned humility in the face of dispair then later at Auburn University in a historical time of renewed spirit and hope. I remember Jimmy always working towards first chair as a trumpeteer, and later on as the biggest Dye hard AU fan for our beloved Tigers that I ever knew. Life mirrors our efforts fully. Jimmy, you'll not only be eternally known as "The Mayor" but you'll always be the most dedicated Auburn fan I ever knew. War Eagle!

Stewart Family,

I was deeply saddened to hear of the news. I spoke with Jimmy at one of the last games last year. I know he is with Jesus. His service to children is amazing. He is an outstanding example for others.

I met Jimmy through business but our relationship became much more than that. Jimmy was a person who would always do anything he could for us.....or anyone else for that matter. It's hard to believe he is gone. I'll miss him.
