Nadine Maynard Johnson
February 12, 1941 - March 3, 2024
Nadine Maynard Johnson was born in Williamson, WV, one of three daughters of Edgle and Naomi Lois Lee Maynard. Nadine grew up in Narrows Branch, Kentucky, on the Hatfield side of the Tug River Valley. Her husband, Jerry (Gerald Johnson), came from the McCoy side. They both claim marginal credit for contributing to the final settlement of that longstanding family feud.
Nadine graduated from Belfry High School in 1959 where she was a cheerleader. She later completed Business School and Cosmetology School, from which she was the recipient of multiple professional awards.
She married her high school sweetheart, Gerald Johnson, after graduation and they would have celebrated their Anniversary of 65 years this May. After living in North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, they moved to Auburn, Alabama, home for the last 53 years.
After the move to Auburn, in addition to being the mother of three kids, Nadine had a thirty-year career in banking, including a twenty-year career with Auburn Bank, from which she retired in 2011.
During these years, Nadine was, first and foremost, a loving and generous mother and grand mommy (hundreds of games and performances). She was also a Foster Parent, Cub Scout Den Mother, avid bridge player, bowler (multiple trophies), traveler, superb dancer, loyal Tiger fan , and a sometimes golfer - making a hole-in-one and winning a couples' tournament. In her later years, she was an avid quilter, stitching heirloom quality quilts by hand and giving them to family members.
Nadine was a member of Auburn First Baptist Church for 54 years and was a frequent hostess for the Seeker's Sunday School Class.
In 2012, Nadine was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She lived fully for several years with the diagnosis, participating first in the Montgomery UMC Respite program and later helping to establish the REACH program of Auburn United Methodist Church, both community cooperative ministries to care for and support persons with memory loss. She will continue to contribute to this community as a donor to the UAB Alzheimer's Brain Center and to the UAB Anatomical Donor Program.
In her journey with Alzheimer's, the family thanks the loving home care givers Nadine had in her earlier stages and the care she received at Arbor Springs in her later and final stages.
Nadine was predeceased by her parents, Edgle and Lois Maynard and sister, Eunice Carole Hubbard (Jackie) of Hardy, KY. She is survived by her sister, Ada Lee Dorris (Joe), of Lewisburg, KY, and, three children, Teresa Lynne Spivey (Dell) of Phenix City, AL, Gerald Mark (Kari) of Opp, AL, and Lee Alice of Auburn, AL; seven grandchildren, Lauren Lee Duncan (Ben), Elizabeth Ann Johnson (Paul), Tracey Nadine Ayers (Trey), Jordan Price Johnson, Morgan Lee Johnson, Hayley Nicole Thompson (Tyler), Mackenzie Elizabeth Lee Johnson, nine great-grandchildren, Benjamin Trey Duncan, Samuel Lee Duncan, Mary Ann Duncan, Waylon George Johnson, Clara Hayes Johnson, Josephine Patton Johnson, Hawkins Jeremiah Johnson, Dorry Ann Ayers, and Mary Constance Ayers, and many nephews and nieces.
In lieu of a memorial service, the family requests participation in "A Moment of Remembrance" in celebration of Nadine's life. You may participate by sending notes of remembrance and celebration to the family or through Auburn First Baptist Church. You may also participate by sharing a moment of personal reflection and remembrance about Nadine with a member of your family or a friend. And you may participate by contributing to one of the programs Nadine gave much to over the years, Auburn First Baptist Church, 128 E. Glenn Ave., Auburn, AL 36830; the Food Bank of East Alabama, 355 Industry Drive, Auburn, AL, 36832, or to REACH, Auburn United Methodist Church, 137 S Gay St., Auburn, AL 36830.
