Peter March Huggins

June 23, 1951 - October 24, 2022

Peter March Huggins, aged 71, residing in Auburn, Alabama, passed away on October 24, 2022.

Peter, born in Oxford, Mississippi on June 23, 1951, grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He studied Literature, History, and Law at various Universities in the south. He completed his Undergraduate degree at Sewanee, University of the South, graduating Cum Laude. He began his post graduate studies at McGill University and went on to earn a Law Degree at Cumberland Law School from Samford University. Peter completed his studies with an MFA in Creative Writing from The University of Alabama. He was recognized with many different accolades, including The Tennessee Williams Scholar program. He joined the English department at Auburn University in 1985 and taught with dedication and enthusiasm for thirty years.

Peter March Huggins lived a full life. He married his loving wife, Chris Cooper, and was a devoted father to two loving children, Thomas (Andrea), and Dabney (Michael Hannay), and three grandchildren, McKenna Huggins, Layne Huggins, and Avelyn Huggins. Peter was pre deceased by his parents, Dr. Clyde "Sid" and Evelyn Huggins of Mobile, Alabama and Covington, Louisiana. He is survived by two sisters, Lydia Schmalz (Howard, deceased) and Lisa Wilson (Peter). Peter was also survived by nephews, Philip Schmalz, Matthew Wilson, Andrew Wilson and Peter Wilson, Jr.

In addition to being an avid golfer, Peter enjoyed a lifelong interest in history and literature, however, his true passion was writing. He published one young adult novel, In the Company of Owls, and two children's books, Trosclair and the Alligator, and Thibodeaux and the Fish. His first children's book appeared on the PBS show "Between the Lions," received a Mom's Choice Award, and was selected as a best book by the Bank Street College of Education and by the CCBC at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has also published over three hundred poems in various journals and magazines as well as seven volumes of poetry, including South and Audubon's Engraver.

Peter's life was enriched with a quest for knowledge and information, not only to learn, but to share.

A memorial service will take place on Friday December 9, 2022 at 2pm at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Auburn, Alabama with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Peter to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Auburn, Alabama or the Spencer Cancer Center in Opelika, Alabama.
