Earl Grayson Obituary

MIDLAND - Earl Thomas Grayson, 63, a New Orleans native, passed away of cardiac arrest, and without suffering, on April 26, 2016 at his home in Midland, Texas. Earl had three careers: a symphony trumpet player, an optometrist, and a life-long astronomer and astro-photographer. Earl studied music and astronomy at LSU after earning a degree in Psychology at University of New Orleans. After winning the concerto competition at LSU, Earl became First Chair trumpeter for the Jackson Symphony Orchestra. He earned a doctorate of optometry at U.A. Birmingham. Because he needed a dry climate for his astronomy, he moved to Midland, and started his optometry practice of 25 years, at which he worked until the day he died.

Earl attended St. Christopher Elementary in Metairie, LA and Rummel high School. In high school, Earl played in Soul Merchants, a rock back, for whom he did horn arrangements. After the death of a much older brother, Steve, Earl was the cherished only child of Steve and Amelia Grayson, both of New Orleans.

Earl built his own astronomical observatory at his second home in Fort Davis, Texas, where he and Frances enjoyed the mountain scenery and clear dark skies, his window to the universe. Possessed of a piercing intelligence, Earl remembered ordinary and extraordinary events of his entire lifetime by exact date. Despite distance, Earl remained in frequent contact with his childhood friends from New Orleans, and musicians and astronomers he worked with. From stardust to stardust, so Earl returns.

Earl is survived by his beloved spouse of 23 years, Frances Gonzales, and her children and their grandchildren, for whom he adored and would always have a story about his grandsons, Aldrick, Derick, Benjamin Rodriguez and Bryan Gonzales. Anybody would say that he bragged about their grandsons non-stop and he was a steady and supportive presence. He is also survived by stepson, Angelo Gonzales and wife, Roxann; and stepdaughter, Adina Rodriguez and husband, Ben.

He is preceded in death by brother, Steven Grayson; father, Steve Grayson; and mother, Amelia Grayson.

A rosary service will be held at 7:00 pm, Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel in Midland. A funeral mass will be held at 3:00 pm, Friday, April 29, 2016 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Midland. A memorial service in New Orleans is to be announced.

The family would like to express their gratitude towards all the prayers and support of friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to West Texas Astronomers.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com.

I met Dr. Grayson when I was in the 6th grade in 1996. I remember how he was with his patients, very kind, caring, and personable. I think about him when I put my contacts on in the morning; now that I am a healthcare provider, I aspire to be as caring and compassionate as he was.

So sad to learn that Earl had passed away in 2016. He, I, & Glenn Ellis wrote a paper in an astronomy journal about some discoveries Earl and others made at LSU, which later led to some important observations with the Hubble Space Telescope. My condolences to his family and many friends.

I have just belatedly found out about Earl's passing. Although it had been many years since we last talked, I considered him a good friend and colleague. Earl was Planetarium Curator just before me at the Louisiana Arts and Science Center (now "Louisiana Art and Science Museum" www.lasm.org) in Baton Rouge, which was when he left to become First Trumpet with the Jackson (Mississippi) Symphony Orchestra.

I can remember Earl's delight when he found a great deal on a used Celestron 14 telescope, which I see he continued to use and thoroughly enjoy right up to his death.

I found out about Earl's death through discovering that one of my Coskrey cousins in Austin, Texas had married a Louisiana Grayson descendant (she turns out to be Earl's fifth cousin once removed). Earl would have gotten a chuckle out of the coincidence of one of his cousins having married one of mine!

Earl was one of the best people I've ever known, always considerate to a fault towards everyone he met, and I will miss him very much. I'm glad Earl was able to continue to enjoy life, his work, and his amateur astronomy, as no one could have deserved success and contentment as much as Earl. Rest in Peace.

Earl and I studied Astronomy at LSU together. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He is forever locked in my mind as a youthful student excited about what he was doing. I remember sitting in my dorm working on homework problems with him.

He was a tremendous motivator for me and was one of the best memories from school and a wonderful friend.

My sincere condolences. I only knew him as my eye doctor, but he was passionate about helping people keep their eyesight sharp and not charging them an arm and a leg to do so. A credit to his proffession. His friendliness and frankness was refreshing and reassuring. He gave me 20/20 vision. Literally and figuratively changed the way I see the world. You will be missed!Winter

I am barely finding out about Dr.Grayson's passing a year exactly after. I feel so bad. He was my optometrist since I was 15yrs old. I am now a month from turning 30. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and anybody else whom he loved & cherished. I remember when I first visited his office inside the Walmart location (after receiving my prescription contact lenses) he told me before I went to sleep that same night for me to gaze out into the sky, & look up at the stars, & see the beautiful view I was never able to see before (because of my terrible eye vision). I'll never forget the amazing view I was able to see then & from now on, and all thanks to him & his practice. You will be missed Dr. Grayson. God bless you, & your loved ones/friends, & may the Almighty keep you in his love, warmth, & glory for ever. Rest in peace.

Earl was a very dear friend to me and my son. I knew him for twenty one years and in that time he never hesitated to help anyone in need. He loved his family dearly. I can't count how many wonderful memories I have of Earl and Frances. He had a love for optometry, his patients and for the vast sky above. He will be missed by so many. My condolences to his family.

My family and I had seen Dr Grayson since we moved to Midland in 1996, he was always so sweet and had so many wonderful stories to tell us. He always warned my son, Zach against damaging sunlight due to his light eyes and you could tell he truly cared about his patience. I just recently learned of his passing and am terribly sad and just in shock. He was a wonderful man and a wonderful eye dr! HE WILL BE MISSED by all of us! God Bless You!

I was terribly saddened when I recently learned of Dr. Grayson's passing. He provided 10 years of eye health to both me & my two children. He was patient, kind, friendly, intelligent, & talented. I would gaze in awe at the amazing astronomical photos he took that were hanging at his practice. My prayers go out to his family, friends, colleagues, staff, and fellow patients.

A beautiful obituary for a beautiful soul and mind and dear friend. A very sad loss for all whose lives he touched. He kept in touch with dear childhood friends, Johnny and Jimmy, on a daily basis, and I'm sure the list is longer than that. How many of us can say that? Sorely missed....but thankful to have known him.

To Earl's family and friends, I offer my sympathy for his loss. What a wonderful obituary and life accomplishment he had. We had one thing in common: attending St. Christopher School although I was older. God has called another Angel to Heaven to watch over his family and friends from Above. May Earl now RIP in his new home in Heaven. Amen.

R thrThe trumpet is silenced. I can still envision Earl and I standing on the steps of kindergarten graduation. Earl was remarkable with dates. He would also call me throughout the year and ask me if I remember what happened on that date in the 1960's. Earl was a great musician and wonderful friend. The LSU Alabama game won't be the same without all the phone calls from Earl complaining about Les Miles. When I read the email from Jimmy Smith of Earl's passing, I stared in space in disbelief the looked at my wife and said who"s going to call me on my birthday.

I am shocked and saddened to read the news of my cousin Earl's passing. We were close when growing up in Metairie. When my father died just before my third birthday, it was Uncle Steve and Earl that were there when I needed guidance. Earl helped me with Algebra, playing the clarinet, and yes Astronomy. Earl always had the best toys. I loved going to his house on Civic Street back in the day. He left us way too soon. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and love.

I will miss our conversations about astronomy and astrophotography. I will miss his company every time I look up at the sky or process an astro image. Earl was a great mentor in my life and such a wonderful friend (my closest). He would do anything for me and I would likewise do anything for him. We had a great friendship over the past 13 years. I will miss him deeply and there will be a huge void in my life without his presence.
