Herbert Gibson Obituary
Visitation will be held from 5pm – 9pm Wednesday, July 29, 2015, and 9am – 9pm Thursday, July 30, 2015, at Martinez Funeral Home.
He was born On November 30, 1942 to John D and Jessie Mae Gibson, as the youngest of 4 Children.
Services will be held at Martinez Funeral Home on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 10 A.M with Pastor Christopher Hager officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Martinez Funeral Home.
The family came to Odessa in 1952, joining St John Baptist Church. Herbert later joined Texas and Clements Church of Christ.
He attended and graduated from Blackshear High School in 1961 and also took same course at Odessa College. He served in the United States Army and was the first African – American hired at the Ector County Sheriff's Department. He went on to retire from the county in 1992.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, John B. Gibson and Clyde Gibson.
He is survived by his sons D. Terrence Gibson, Odessa, TX, Herbert T. Gibson, Houston, TX, Victor Forge, Odessa, TX, and one daughter, Chastaney Jones, Euless, TX, sister, Celestine and her husband, Riley Rand of Odessa, TX, grandchildren, Sharlon Rodriguez, Alexandria, VA, Britney Coutee, Sprin6gfield, VA, Terrence Gibson, Jr., Odessa, TX, and Yosiyah David, Odessa, TX, five great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

The man I knew, Herbert (and who was fondly referred to as "Hoot") Gibson was always a man of good character, friendly, humble, generally soft spoken and most of all extremely like-able. My sympathy is extended to all in his family.
