Maxine Rogers Obituary

ODESSA - Maxine Rogers of Odessa, TX, stepped into God's eternal glory on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at the age of 94. She was born during a thunderstorm, July 21, 1928. Rain fell through the roof and onto her mother, Johnnie Dewey Starling, as she struggled to give birth to her fifth of seven children. Her dad, William Albertus Hancock, delivered the baby after pushing the bed across the room to keep them dry. Maxine grew up on various farms in Fisher County. From age 6, Maxine worked in the fields and managed the hired workers. Milking the cows, hoeing weeds, and checking filled cotton sack weights were a few of the tasks expected of her as a young child. Maxine's younger sister, Norma Parks of Roby, TX is the only sibling who survives.

In high school, she worked cattle on horseback. Maxine was also on the tennis team, excelled in Math and was voted Best All-Around Girl her senior year. The desire of her heart was to study biology at Texas Tech, but her father deemed it too dangerous for a "proper young lady." Following graduation from Roby High School in 1946, Maxine enrolled in Isabell's University of Beauty Culture in Fort Worth. Graduating in 1948, she received her license in cosmetology. On her sixteenth birthday, her friends asked what she wanted. She saw a handsome young man walking down the sidewalk and she wanted him. W. A. Rogers climbed into the car and was said glad to be her "gift." They were wed in a ceremony at her parent's home, April 27, 1948. Riding a bus to Biloxi, MS, William completed his service to our country. Upon his discharge, the young couple moved to Rotan and Maxine opened her own beauty shop in Roby. After moving to Odessa, she practiced cosmetology, worked for Sears Roebuck, and S&H Green Stamp. During their 64 years of marriage, they also lived in Nevada and Utah.

Mom loved going to church. "I encourage everyone to attend church. It brings peace to your soul and lifelong friendships." She was a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church where she taught Bible Study. When her children were young, she taught in Primaries and Children's

Divisions. When they were teenagers, she taught youth. Maxine taught adults after her children married. Maxine had a deep love for the Word of God. She was an active supporter of Samaritan

Purse, Door of Hope Mission, Leading the Way Ministries, and Meals-on-Wheels

William and Maxine were blessed with three children. CPT William A. Rogers, Jr. USN,

Retired of Waco; Vickie Bucy (Keith), of Midland; and Sandra Rowe (Andy), of Odessa.

We are grateful for the school and church trips she chaperoned; security she provided for us; support and involvement in our activities; encouragement and backing of our dreams; and how she took the time to teach us that God's love is a relationship. "Thank you, mom for pouring your love into our lives!"

She loved her children but adored her grandchildren; David Rogers (Red Oak, TX);

Captain Daniel Rogers, (USCG of New Orleans, LA); Lisa Rowe McKay (Buford, GA); Erika

Bucy Stack (Reno, NV); Alan Rowe (Cedar Park, TX); and Rachel Rogers Scott (Arlington, VA). However, the delight of her heart were her twelve great-grandchildren.

Parkinson's and heart disease plagued her later years. As her body was attacked and weakened by disease, her positive attitude and sense of humor never wavered. Because she could not stop moving, she said it was her way of exercising all the time. Mom asked Jesus to be her Savior when she was twenty-two. Because of her faith in Jesus the Christ, her tired body has died but her spirit lives now in the presence of God. See you later, mom!
