Sylvia Underwood Obituary

ODESSA Sylvia Underwood was called home to be with her Lord, on December 8, 2010. She was born in Big Spring on December 29, 1921, to James Ephraim Pond and Eula Boykin. She met and later married Jack Underwood on Feb 1, 1941, in Big Spring, and shortly thereafter, moved to Odessa where they raised their children.

For many years she and her husband enjoyed traveling extensively and "trailering" with the Airstream International Club throughout the United States and Canada.

After retiring in 1979 from El Paso Products, Sylvia became a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Medical Center Auxiliary. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for 68 years. As a long-time member, she enjoyed 30 years participating in the adult choir, serving as treasurer for Kit, and volunteering in the church library. She was a master seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and oil painting.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Jack of 67 years; and sisters, Mary Robbins and Opal Landers.
Survivors include her daughter, Janet Thornton and husband, Don of Sherman, Texas; son, Michael Wayne Underwood and wife, Debbie of Odessa; four grandchildren, Brooke Trevino of Waco, Texas, Michael Thornton of Plano, Texas, Ramona Dillard of Castle Rock, Colo., and Cody Underwood of Odessa; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made in Sylvia's memory to a favorite charity or to First Baptist Church Library.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 13, 2010, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Curtis Brewer officiating.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home of Odessa.
