Anica Rawnsley Obituary

Anica Donnan Rawnsley, 94, of Upper St. Clair, died Wednesday, August 9, 2023, in Friendship Village of South Hills.

She was born July 27, 1929, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late John Hannay and Anica Chambers Donnan. Her stepfather was H. Gilmore Schmidt.

She graduated from The Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and Goucher College. She attended Bank Street College, earning a Masters of Education degree.

She was an elementary school teacher, serving on the faculty of Germantown and Abington Friends School and Friends Central, all in the Philadelphia area.

On September 4, 1964, she married Dr. Herbert H. Rawnsley, who died February 2, 2004.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Washington.

In earlier years she was active in community affairs. She was the president of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Easter Seal Society and a member of the State Board of Directors. She served as the president of the Friends of the Citizen's Library Board and the Washington County Medical Auxiliary. In 1975 she was asked to be the first female trustee of Washington and Jefferson College. She was awarded an honorary degree in 2003 and is now a Trustee Emeritus. She also served on the Goucher College Board of Trustees.

She is the last member of her immediate family. A brother died, shortly after his birth, in 1927.

All services were private and entrusted to Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Directors, Washington.
