David Ream Obituary

David Lester Ream died of a heart attack at his family mountain home in Silverthorne, Colo., Wednesday, November 6, 2024. He was born February 7, 1945, to Robert Kimmel and Mary Schiffauer Ream of Johnstown. David was raised in Johnstown, and graduated from Johnstown High School in 1963. He attended Washington & Jefferson College, where he earned a BA in Math and Economics and graduated in 1967. David earned a Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in 1969 and 1975, respectively. David married Sibyl Hamilton Sharp August 12, 1972. David and Sibyl enjoyed the early years of their marriage in Philadelphia, where David started his legal career with Gulf Oil Corporation in 1975. In 1983, David was transferred to Houston, Texas, where he was instrumental in the merger between Gulf and Chevron Corporation. David served as Managing Counsel - Litigation for Chevron, where he later facilitated the merger between Chevron and Texaco. David was admitted to the United States Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the Supreme Court of the State of Texas, and was a member of the Washington County Bar Association. David retired from Chevron in 2004 and returned to Washington with Sibyl to continue Sharp's Furniture Store until 2015. David was the proud father of three children: Alison Ream Griffin of Lafayette, Colo.; Elizabeth (Steve) Ream Wykoff of Bozeman, Mont.; and William (Shannon) Robert Ream of Arvada, Colo. He is survived by eight grandchildren: Nicholas and Benjamin Griffin of Lafayette; Preston, Davis, Carter and Oliver Wykoff of Bozeman; and Ryland and Addison Ream of Arvada. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mary Ream; his brothers, Charles Robert and James William; sisters-in-law, Marion Cover Ream and Sue Sharp Patnesky; and brother-in-law, David Boyd Sharp. David's lifetime commitment to friendship, excellence, and service were rooted in his collegiate membership in the Alpha Chapter of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Throughout his life, he was active in civic and community organizations including First United Methodist Church, where he served as chair of the Board of Trustees; and the World War II 65th Infantry Division Association, where he served as president for three years. Anyone who interacted with David knew that he was a masterful list maker, had an impeccable attention to detail, and always found unique ways to recognize the contributions of others. David's family will be forever inspired by his indelible work ethic and quiet kindness to others, which came through in the way he loved and supported each member of his family. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, and 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 21, in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. David Ream - My brother and friend.
David was my brother. We first met on the football field when we were in 7th grade. David was the quarterback for the losing Cochran Team. I think I tackled him and then shook his had after Garfield won. We next met in Johnstown High School. David was extremely popular, a great wrestler, and a gifted student in the JHS class of 1963.
Our friendship blossomed when we both entered Washington & Jefferson College. We were roommates during our college years as well as Phi Gamma Delta fraternity brothers. David excelled on the wrestling team and in the classroom. We shared many math and economic classes and great times together.
David was cool and he mentored me in many ways. He even taught me about a store named Brooks Brothers! His sense of humor was subtle, but very effective. He was one of the leaders of the fraternity house as well as the best steward ever. His love of food and meal planning was a joy to all.
David was ahead of his time. After graduation, David went on to business and law schools. During that time, David along with his brother Chuck (who was the W&J football coach) developed a computer program for offensive play calling. This program was used by David in an actual football game where David called all W&J´s offensive plays using the computer program. This may be the first and maybe even the only "live" computer football game.
David then entered the business world and was a success. When I was working on an investment transaction in Toronto, the top litigation lawyer in Toronto stated he was working with Chevon on a very complicated deal. When I inquired whether he knew David, this lawyer stated David was the lead lawyer on this deal and further stated David was the most outstanding and smartest corporate lawyer he had ever met. David was brilliant.
Sibyl and David raised a great family and David often talked about how he was so lucky. We chatted and communicated via e-mail over the past years staying up to date, sharing funny stories, and our thoughts about the world.
I will miss his wisdom, humor, guidance, and caring soul. Rest well, brother.

I was very saddened to hear of David´s passing. Sibyl, you have my sincerest sympathy. 10 years later, I fondly remember your precious "fat cats" I used to house sit. At the time, they were the largest cats I had ever met! David was a kind man and I am sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Camil Pato
