Edward Caffrey Obituary

Edward Thomas Caffrey, a devoted family man and an embodiment of the American spirit, peacefully passed away at home Monday, October 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, leaving behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and unwavering optimism. He was born on March 25, 1930, in Washington. Throughout his life, Ed exemplified what it meant to be a hard worker, never hesitating to put his family first. His career spanned various roles, including salesman at Richman Brothers, draftsman at Wheatman and RCA, as well as a bushing maker at McGraw Edison. His dedication and work ethic were matched only by his commitment to his family and country. As a young man, Ed was a remarkable athlete, participating in three sports while attending East Washington High School, where he proudly played for the Galloping Ghosts. He achieved honorable mention all state as a defensive back in football during his senior year, a testament to his skills and determination. After high school, he attended Waynesburg University and Clarion State University, where he made the varsity football team in his sophomore year, showcasing his instinctive gift for sports and teamwork. Ed served his country during the Korean Conflict, were he had the honor of being a personal bodyguard to General Maxwell D. Taylor while in the 8th Army Honor Guard. His bravery and service earned him several commendations, including the Korean Service Medal, 3 Bronze Battle Stars, a Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Presidential Unit Citation. Family was the cornerstone of Ed's world, In February of 1973 he met his soul mate Dorothy, they married on March 10, 1979 and enjoyed 46 joyful married years together. Ed derived immense joy from watching his five children: Mark, Shawn, Donald, Judith and Kathy,, as they played sports, taking pride in their accomplishments as a parent does. His cherished memories include swimming at Sunset Beach, taking his family to the drive-in movies, and camping at Shawnee State Park and Cooper Camp Ground. Later in life, he developed new passions, such as fantasy football, watching high school wrestling, and enjoying trips to Wheeling Downs with his wife. Edward looked forward to vacations at Ocean Isle Beach, Tuesday night dinners, and cruises that allowed him to create lasting memories with his family. Ed's warmth and optimism were not easily forgotten. His favorite saying, "Keep 'em Flying!" became a mantra that embodied his positive spirit and served as a reminder to always look on the bright side. He believed wholeheartedly in the American Dream and demonstrated through his actions that with hard work, service to country, commitment, compassion, and honesty, dreams indeed come true. Ed is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Dorothy Ward Caffrey; his children: sons: Mark E. (Lynn) Caffrey, Shawn A. (Kathy) Caffrey and Donald P. (Lynn) Herschell; daughters, Judith A. (Robin) Herschell - Cole and Kathy L. (Mark) Keenan. He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Brandon (Susie) Keenan, Lee (Matt) Burnsworth, Alexandra (John) Makripodis, Mallory (fiance, Draven Frye) Keenan, Lyndon Herschell and Mya Cole; as well as his great-grandchildren: Sydney and Andrea Burnsworth, Nolan, Jacob and Ryleigh Keenan, and Sophia and Melina Makripodis. His sister, Cordelia M. Caffrey, mourns the loss of her beloved brother; as do many relatives and friends whose lives he touched. Ed was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Caffrey and Martin "Billy" Caffrey; as well as his grandson, Andrew Mark Keenan. The love and lessons he imparted during his lifetime will resonate in the hearts of his family, a cherished reminder of a life well-lived. Yesterday

I was a front desk receptionist at the doctor´s office where Mr. Caffrey was a patient....my favorite patient. He was always kind and had a way of communicating that made me feel appreciated. I could tell from the first he was a man of high integrity. I´m so sorry to hear of his passing, and my thoughts and prayers are with his lovely wife and family.

Mark--I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. Although my dad was 15 years older, he had said that he and your dad played ball together and that he was a good athlete! No matter how old we are, it's never easy to say goodbye to a parent. Thinking of you and Shawn at this time.
