Freda McClain Obituary

Freda P. Hixenbaugh McClain peacefully joined her heavenly family Monday evening, September 8, 2025. She was born February 24, 1937, in Star City, W.Va., a daughter of the late John and Susanna DeTemple Hixenbaugh. Freda was a longtime resident of Burgettstown. She spent the past 42 years working at the Super Dollar and Giant Eagle, where she was the Union Steward for USCW #23, retiring in 2023. A charter member of the Burgettstown Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, she enjoyed cooking, baking and decorating cakes. She loved to sew and took pride in making her children's school clothes. Most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and looked forward to summer when she would watch them swimming from her deck. Many family reunions took place, she as the host. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald "Red" McClain, Sr., who passed away January 3, 1997; daughters, Susan and Bonnie; in-laws, Stanley and Ivey McClain; sisters, Shirley Salvadori (John) of Bulger, Frances "Pug" Zeszutek (Bernie) of Cecil; brothers, John Hixenbaugh (Joanne) of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Frank Hixenbaugh (Jan) of Bethel Park. Freda is survived by her children, Diane of Burgettstown, and Jerry and wife Janet of Cherry Valley; grandchildren, Nicole (Cuddy) of Cherry Valley, Michelle and Gerri Renee of Avella; stepgrandson, John Mondin (Carter) of Dallas, Texas; and a great- granddaughter, Makayla Romanetti of Avella. Also surviving are her brother, Charles (Patty) Hixenbaugh of Hartville, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Marlene Antonetti of Burgettstown, Darlene Shiel of Hopewell, Janice Hixenbaugh of Bethel Park; brother-in-law, Dan Yeager of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Family and friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 11, in Slater Funeral & Cremation Services, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, PA 15021, where services, officiated by the Rev. Tom Jones, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 12. She will be laid to rest in Grandview Cemetery, Florence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in her memory, to the Burgettstown Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 426, Burgettstown, PA 15021. Freda's family wishes to thank the nurses of AHN Hospice for their care and support. www.Burgettstown.SlaterFuneral.com
