Joseph Boyer

1936 - 2024

It is with a saddened heart that we announce that Joseph "Joe" Boyer, 87, of Eighty-Four, went to be with his Lord Friday, March 8, 2024. He passed in the Donnell House after a long and courageous battle with cancer and Parkinson's. He was born June 27, 1936, in Cadet, Mo., to the late Patrick and Lula Boyer. Joseph joined the Navy in December of 1955, and served on the USS Lake Champlain during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Also, it was his ship that recovered Alan Sheppard upon the return from the first manned space mission in human history. After the Navy, Joe went on to work for McGraw Edison/Cooper Industries in its plating line and service department. Over the years, he was a member of The First Church of the Nazarene. He served his Lord there by ushering and being an active board member for many years. On August 20, 1960, in Scenery Hill, he married the love of his life, Carol B. Harden. Joe and Carol met in Bermuda and after a short time Joe asked Carol to marry him. They were happily married for 64 years. Joe was happiest when his family was around, solving crossword puzzles, wood working, and his favorite, working in his flower/garden beds. His green thumb shines through his kids now. He was his family's biggest supporter and will always be remembered for his unwavering positivity even on his bad days. Surviving, along with his wife, are his two daughters, Rilla (Joel) Reeder of Washington, and Paula (John) Daniels of Stow, Ohio; two brothers, Virgil Boyer and Kenny Boyer; four sisters, Eilene Allen, Della Walz, Martha Mercial, and Alice Noack; three grandchildren, Jenna Beatty, John Tyler (Taylor) Daniels, and Rachel Daniels; two great- grandchildren, Kinley Beatty, and Kollyns Daniels; a brother-in- law, James (Chris) Harden; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. Deceased are two brothers, Glennon Boyer and Marvin "Bud" Boyer; and a sister, Geneva Wright. Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 18, in the Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, in The First Church of the Nazarene, 1336 North Main Street, Washington, with the Rev. Carl Kibler and Pastor Shane Harden officiating. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, with military honors at 1:30. Condolences may be expressed at www.piattandbarnhill.com.
