Peter J. Nikas

1935 - 2015

Dr. Peter J. "Panagiotis" Nikas, 80, of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 27, 2015, in the home of his daughter.
He was born August 16, 1935, in Canonsburg, a son of the late John and Katina Vlamis Nikas.
Dr. Nikas was a graduate of Canonsburg High School, where he ran for the track team and was state champion of the half-mile, setting a record that wasn't broken for many years. He attended University of Pittsburgh, graduating from its dental school.
He served his country with the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a captain after serving in Frankfurt, Germany.
Dr. Nikas had a dental practice in Canonsburg for more than 30 years.
He was an active member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Canonsburg.
Dr. Nikas was a member of AHEPA Chapter 156, Canonsburg, where he served multiple terms as both president and secretary. He was also a member of Cretan Association of Pittsburgh, where he served multiple terms as president, Pan Rhodian Society and Washington County Dental Association.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Rosemary Turiczek Blanock Nikas of Canonsburg; four sons, Dr. John R. (Georgia) Nikas of West Chester, Eric (Wendy) Blanock of Washington, Kurt (Janice) Blanock of Cecil and Craig (Laura) Blanock of Canonsburg; four daughters, Catherine Nikas of Dallas, Texas, Kristin (Stephen) Magee of Apex, N.C., Karen (Patrick) Goode of Canonsburg and Marilyn (Mark) Manski of Blairsville; two sisters-in-law, Aphrodite Nikas of Springhill, Fla., and Nadia Nikas of Vienna, Va.; 17 grandchildren, Alexandra, John, Andrew (Ashley), Marissa, Micaela, Zachary, Alyssa, Murphy-Rose, Carla (Adam), Pierce, Luke, Katie, Abby, Nicholas, Ella, Howard and Marie; a great-grandson, Christopher; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, George Nikas and Gen. Nicholas Nikas.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director, 724-746-1000. An additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Monday, November 2, in All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 601 West McMurray Road, Canonsburg, PA 15317. Interment will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township, with full military rites accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191, Canonsburg. Trisagion services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
