Thomas Galvin Obituary

Father Thomas John Galvin, 74, joined his heavenly Father Saturday, October 11, 2025. Born November 17, 1950, Father Tom attended St. Agnes Elementary School in West Mifflin and Bishop Boyle High School in Homestead. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from California University of Pennsylvania. While working as an assistant editor on the sports desk for the Observer-Reporter in Washington, he answered the call to the priesthood and attended Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md. receiving a Master's in Divinity. He was ordained June 26, 1982 by Bishop Vincent Leonard at St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh. While serving the Diocese of Pittsburgh for 43 years, his ministry assignments included St. Ferdinand Parish (Cranberry Township), St. Thomas More Parish (Bethel Park), St. Sebastian Parish (Ross Township), St. Bartholomew Parish (Penn Hills), Risen Lord Parish (Pittsburgh), St. John the Baptist (Plum), St. Patrick Church (McKeesport), and St. Oscar Romero Parish (Canonsburg). Father Tom enjoyed sports, Civil War history with trips to Gettysburg, cooking, traveling, and time with family and friends. He was known for his annual New Year's Day Party, where he proudly displayed his extensive Christmas decorations. He loved to decorate both his residence and the church for any occasion. He was also the Diocesan Spiritual Advisor for the Pittsburgh Cursillo Movement for 12 years, a position he especially cherished, and he wrote many devotionals. But in everything that he did, he served with love and dedication. "I enjoy every moment of my ministry," Father Galvin once said when interviewed. He dearly missed serving in ministry while in the hospital and during his time of recuperating, though he continued to witness to those around him from his personal care room. Fr. Galvin was preceded in death by his parents, Eleanor and William Galvin. He is survived by his stepmother, Patricia Galvin; siblings, William Galvin (Connie), Robert Galvin (Diane), James Galvin (Christine), Eileen Joll (Jeff), and Matt Galvin (Amy); his aunt, Sister Loretta Jean Schorr, CDP; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 17, in St. Agnes Church (St. Thomas the Apostle Parish) in West Mifflin. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 18 in Holy Trinity Church (St. Thomas the Apostle Parish), West Mifflin, with viewing one hour before the service. Internment and luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Little Sisters of the Poor (https://littlesistersofthepoorpittsburgh.org). All arrangements have been handled by the George Irvin Green Funeral Home in Munhall.

I first met Fr. Tom when he was newly transferred to St, Barts in Penn Hills. He was the assistant, I was the head basketball and football coach. Just a very little time after he arrived, my boys team was playing for the Pa. state championship. We were winning by a small amount at half time, and I, as usual, was being a bit wild. He was in our locker room then and EVERY TIME I went on a little rant, I would look over at him. As we started out of the locker room to begin the second half, he came over, put his arm around me and asked why I kept looking at him every time I said something colorful. I told him I thought I was going to get fired any second. Well, we lost, and he came up to me after the game and said he thinks that I needed a beer. We became GREAT FRIENDS, and I followed him to EVERY PARISH he went to. We spoke only a short time before he passed, and I SOBBED when hearing of his passing. TOM had a HUGE IMPACT on my life, even to the point of celebrating the Rite of Marrying my youngest son, Dave, and his wife Erin at Duquesne's Chapel. I'm SURE, that,he is with the LORD, looking down and guiding and protecting his family, and his MANY FRIENDS. RIP, MY DEAREST FRIEND.
