Thomas Shorts Obituary

Thomas M. Shorts, of Carnegie, originally from Library, passed away peacefully in his home Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the age of 79. He was the beloved husband of Cheryl Furno Shorts, who preceded him in death in 2015; son of the late John and Clara Steingraber Shorts; loving father of Michael (Sherri) and Geoffrey (Megan); dear Pap Pap to Raven, Nathan, Brandy and Jacob; brother-in-law of Trudy (the late Jack) Shorts, Elaine (Gerry) Watson, and Michele (Terry) Kocian; uncle to John Shorts, Emily (Trevor) Gammell, Matthew (Addy) Kocian, Ethan Gammell and the late Alex Kocian; also several cousins. Growing up in Library, Tom helped his dad and brother on construction and remodel projects, before and after his military service. Tom served two years in the U.S. Army (Vietnam, Rank of E-4) from November of 1965 to November 1967, as a radio operator and, his proudest moment, he would drive the platoon commander around in the jeep. It was on one of his dad's construction projects for Aldo Furno that he met the love of his life, Cheryl. They would write letters back and forth while he was stationed in Vietnam and went on to marry May 6, 1972. Tom worked 40 years as a land agent for Consol Coal Company. He always enjoyed his job, interacting with many land/homeowners throughout Washington and Greene counties. He was acknowledged many times from Consol for his dedication and excellence to what he did. He was an exceptional, and loving caregiver to his disabled wife, Cheryl, for most of their 42 years of marriage. Tom enjoyed outdoor activities, working around the house, cutting grass and always making sure none of "those sticks" were laying in the yard. After Cheryl's passing, he moved in with Geoff and family. Tom enjoyed getting Nathan and Jacob to school in the mornings, making hats from paper plates with Raven and Brandy, family birthdays, and just being close to everyone. His last couple of years were spent living at "the Property", Geoff's new house and office building, situated on a large amount of nicely wooded land. He enjoyed all the scenery there and helping out. Many thanks to the wonderful caregivers, nurses and aides who cared for him, and Dr. Lewis and her team, Karlee and the AHN Hospice Team, who gave exceptional end-of-life care. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, in the David J. Henney Funeral Home, 6364 Library Road (Route 88), Library, where a blessing service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 20. Burial, with full military honors, in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray. www.davidhenneyfuneralhome.com

Nothing but good memories and admiration for a man who lived a Christian life. He never complained, preferring to just do the right thing.

We remember your dad as a quiet and humble man as we met on our farm to talk about mining under us.
