Walter Weaver Obituary

Walter Carl Weaver, 85, formerly of Canonsburg, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in McMurray, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Johnstown, on November 6, 1939, to Clair and Betty Glass Weaver. Walter was the oldest of the couple's five children. He spent his youth in Johnstown, attending local parochial schools before graduating from Johnstown Central Catholic High School in 1957. While at JCCHS, Walter distinguished himself in the classroom and on the debate stage, winning the National Forensic League national title for extemporaneous speech in 1956. Walter attended Saint Vincent College and Seminary in Latrobe, graduating with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1961 and a master's degree in theology in 1963. He credited his alma mater with impressing upon him the Benedictine qualities of hospitality, charity and scholarship. Walt was particularly proud to have three of his children graduate from Saint Vincent. Walt enjoyed a 50+ year career as an educator, first with Canon-McMillan School District; following his retirement from public schools, he continued to teach at Bishop Canevin High School, First Love Christian Academy, Community College of Allegheny County and Washington & Jefferson College. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Nancy Melonic Weaver; his sons: Mark (Mary-Rachael) Weaver of Washington, Paul (Rachael) Weaver of Rio, W.Va. and Justin Weaver of Sharpsburg; his daughter, Clare (Scott) Orwig of Pierce, Nebr.; his stepsons, Trevor (Tracey) Handyside of Melbourne, Fla. and Brent (Terra) Handyside of Canonsburg; 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Walter is also survived by his brothers, Ray (Lois) Weaver of Monroeville and David (Carrie) Weaver of Johnstown; as well as his sister, Jean (Nick) Moran of Palmyra. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Daniel Lee Weaver. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, at the Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra LFD owner / supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, where departing prayers will be recited at 9:40 a.m. on Friday, May 30. A funeral mass will be at the Saint Oscar Romero (St. Patrick's) Catholic church in Canonsburg, beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, May 30. A private interment will take place at the Weaver Family Mausoleum in the Richland Cemetery, Johnstown, on Saturday, May 31. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Walt's honor to the St. Vincent Seminary of Latrobe, or to St. Patrick's Church in Canonsburg.

Mr. Weaver was my nicest teacher. Smart, funny, and caring. He had me sing in Latin in front of people. I would not have e done that for any other teacher.
May God bless your family attain time of loss. And, praise God for his influence on Mr. Weaver.

Mr Weaver was my favorite teacher in junior high! I have many fond memories from History and Latin classes as well as track. Our senior year "naumachia" (boat battle) in the junior high pool was a great memory.

I also remember Mr. Weaver´s Latin class fondly. Only he could teach us the Latin verb tenses in a "cheer," and get us to recite them with him in an animated fashion! I still remember them and of course, him. I am sorry for your loss. He touched many students in a truly inimitable way.

I will always remember Mr. Weaver as one of my favorite teachers even though it was Latin class. He was always such fun and loved when he'd remind us to say, "In Lingua Latina". Glad he had a good, long life.

Mr. Weaver was my 9th grade Latin teacher many years ago. He was enthusiastic and creative and I always looked forward to his class. I still remember the song sheets he prepared with Christmas songs in Latin.
