Peter BALLINGER Obituary

BALLINGER, Peter
Passed away July 14th from health complications that lead to heart failure. He was 58. Pete was the 3rd born of 5 siblings and originally grew up in Orange County Calif. He eventually moved up to his beloved mountains in Northern Calif. where he lived until recently when his illness forced him to move down south with his family. Pete loved to impart his wisdom in regards to good movies, books, history, and of course food. He had a inherent connection to animals and nature in general and was a loyal friend to many. At Christmas he always went overboard to give gifts to his family and friends (especially children). Pete was a 6'5" Harley riding, opinionated mountain man with a heart of gold who was born in the wrong century. He will be sorely missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life. He is survivied by 3 sisters, Jean Webb, Mary Jacobson, and Margie Mohiuddin, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Its only 7 months later and I find myself dearly missing him. He was my younger brother. When we were kids we rode bikes, or walked down the OC swimming pool where we would swim all day and then walk home. I remember him always reading those Classic comic books and he always had a book he was reading.

I remember one day, after he had finished reading ‘The Time Machine', he looked up at me from his book and said “I bet if I remind you of this day in 50 years you won't remember what you were doing and you won't remember this moment”. I laughed at him and went back to what I was doing. Then, after Pete's death, we found a note he had written in pencil that day.

The heading said: “12 ½ minutes to 6 o'clock on Monday, Nov. 13, 1967”. It said: Jean was reading Debby Deere in the Daily Pilot in the Comic Section and I, Peter, was reading “Around the World in Eighty Days” on the lounge, and Jean was sitting in the rocking chair. I shall read this again to Jean if she is still alive 50 years from now, in the year 2017 on Nov 13th 12 ½ minutes to 6'oclock, on whatever day of the week it is.
This was so Pete. I know he would have produced it on the 50 year date, and time.

I remember him taking me down the freeway on his motorcycle. I remember all the house repairs and help he gave me. I remember growing tomatoes having a contest to see whose growing methods would produce the best crop. I remember the young brother with blond hair and long gangly arms & legs always curled up with a book. I remember watching movies with him and knew we always appreciated the movie qualities. It was so nice to share that with him. I miss you Pete.

Love, Jeanie

It has been 30 years since I last saw Peter but remember him as a kind, sensitive person. He was a friend of my family (Taormina family in Costa Mesa) and my favorite picture of him was at ease sitting on his motorcycle.
