Mary Delia "Dee" Spanjers

1932 - 2017

Mary Delia "Dee" Spanjers, age 85, of York, NE died Sunday, December 24, 2017 at York. She was born July 14, 1932 in Oelwein, IA to Howard Lee and Hazel Marie (O'Brien) Cross. On November 27, 1954 she was married to Peter J. Spanjers at Oelwein, IA. She worked for the Schuyler Sun Newspaper, and as a Para-Educator for York Public Schools.
Dee was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the St. Joseph Altar Society, and the York General Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to several bridge clubs. Dee loved reading, quilting, cross word puzzles, golfing, traveling, and antiquing, but the joy of her life was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter Lorie Spanjers, and Rick Pieper of Fort Dodge, IA, son Matt and Ann Spanjers of York, daughters; Leanne and Steve Wiemer of York, Jan and Bob McNally of Raymond, NE, and Jodee and Chad Leach of Lincoln. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrew Spanjers of Omaha, NE, Jake Spanjers of San Diego, CA, Steven and Brittney Wiemer of Rochester, MN, and Jared Wiemer of Newman Grove, NE, Katie McNally of Oak Harbor, WA, Maggie McNally of Chicago, IL, Philip McNally of Youngstown, OH, Michael McNally, Peter McNally, Erin Leach, and Matthew Leach, all of Lincoln. Great-Grandchildren, Lydia and Levi Wiemer of Rochester MN, brother-in-law, Ed Hieb, of Marion, IA, sister-in-law, Mary Cross of Oelwein, IA, brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Ruth Spanjers of Bayside, TX.
Dee was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother John Cross, and sister Kay Hieb.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, York with the Reverend Monsignor James Reinert officiating. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, York.
A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 PM Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017 at Metz Mortuary, with family greeting friends after the Rosary. Visitation will be held from 3-8 PM at the mortuary in York. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
