Aunt Anne and all my cousins,

Rita Brunner and her family mourn with you the passing of her wonderful brother-in-law and our uncle ...Ab.

Ab was an uncle we all admired and loved. He was the Brunner uncle who graduated from Notre Dame University. Whenever we see Notre Dame play football thoughts will always turn to our dear uncle who actually went there...and received his degree. We also always will remember his sacrifice for our country and the war wounds he endured and overcame. All of the Brunner brothers were patriots and soldiers. Ab's wounds touched us all. We do not recall him talking much about the war or his personal sacrifice, but we admired him for his courage and strength. Our dear Dad, Erv,admired him so much that we could not help growing up admiring Ab. Growing up attending Brunner gatherings, I remember Ab as a quite personable man with a dry sense of humor and an infectious grin and laugh. As an adult I remember he usually had a strong opinion or two also. He impressed us with his knowledge..but he will always be remembered for his courage, love of sports...and of course his beloved ND.

Uncle Ab, we will very much miss you, but will always remember you, your bright blue eyes, your voice and your smile.

A Decum Club original, Al, or even "Ab", as dad Donald E. Esker, Sr., came to know him growing up in Akron, was one of the standout stalwart of Brunner boys - and my own Godfather. The Eskers and the Brunners are forever linked by friendship and family bonds - Rita Esker having had the good sense to marry Erv Brunner - and our hearts and minds are with yours on the loss of Al. Seems like only yesterday we were catching lightning bugs in jars with the Brunner kids in Cuyahoga Falls - and we never tired of hearing how then-soldier Al treated his WWII wounds by the lucky location of a wine cask that dripped just enough to ease the pain until the doctors could take over. From Don and Thelma Esker's family - love, thoughts, and prayers.

We praise God for the life and service of our veteran. May he rest in peace in the arms of our Lord as a grateful nation mourns.
