Albert George Hirzel, 86, April 10, 1925-September 24, 2011. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Albert lived most of his life in Bath Township. As a charter member of the Akron Symphony Orchestra, he played violin in 1953, then viola until 1973 and was well respected by his private students. He served proudly in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World WarII in the North and South Pacific from 1943 through 1946. Mr. Hirzel was involved with 4-H, the Bath Pony Club, and was a longtime, active member of Ghent Christian Church. He retired from B.F. Goodrich Tire and Rubber Company in the Research Center after 30 years of faithful service. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alix; daughters, Joy (Larry) Hein, Holly, Carolyn Birchenall, Julia (Ralph Eckart), and Amy (Glenn) Wert; grandchildren, Sasha, Neill (Lorna), Eric (Rachel), Rael, Jack, William and Anna; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Allison, Michael, Iona, Eden, Tobias, Ethan and Evelyn. Celebrate his life with us Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Ghent Christian Church, 4200 Granger Rd., Akron 44333. Service in the sanctuary at 3 p.m.; then gather with family and friends immediately following in the fellowship hall attached to the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Akron Symphony or Ghent Christian Church. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)

"Al Hirzel was an inspiring man! I loved to watch his hands moving -- making music, building things, and illustrating his explanations. His is a life well lived! Your loss is considerable...he meant so much."

I know the heartache you are experiencing now is a lot to bear. Words of condolence will have little meaning at a time like this, but I only hope that with the passage of time your memories will soften the ache.

Alex and Family,

May the love of neighbors, friends and family carry you through your grief. Al served the community in countless ways. As a Springcrest Subdivision resident of Bath Township, I remember and honor Al for the contribution he made to our community over the years.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

My condolences to Al's family. I remember Al and the many conversations we had about Bath and BFGoodrich while we were working at the Brecksville Center. It saddens me to read of another member of the old BFG gang passing.
