Carl Krill Obituary

Carl Krill

Carl Emil KrillI, Jr., MD

Our loving father and Opa died on 15 January 2016.

Carl was born on 2 November 1933, the son of Dr. Carl E. and Helene R. (Conroy) Krill of Akron. He graduated from St. Vincent Preparatory School in Latrobe, Pa., John Carroll University and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. During his final year of studies, Carl met Patricia L. Powers, a nurse at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. They wed on 12 September 1959.

Postgraduate training took the young couple to Cincinnati, where their first child, a son, was born. Six years later they welcomed a daughter into their lives. From 1966 to 1968, Carl served in the U.S. Navy, from which he was discharged with the rank of commander. Returning with his family to Akron, Dr. Krill began a long association with Children's Hospital Medical Center.

As founding director of the Division of Hematology-Oncology, Carl coordinated the care of Akron-area children afflicted with hemophilia, sickle-cell anemia and other blood disorders, including a special outreach to the Amish and Mennonite communities in Holmes County. As a pediatric clinician, Carl contributed to nationwide studies that improved patient treatment, and for more than 40 years he served the children of Summit County Children Services in its clinic. His compassionate, skillful care of children with leukemia was recognized in 2005 with a Hope Award from the American Cancer Society.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife; his brother, Richard M. Krill; and his sisters, Mary E. Sawan and Kathleen T. Danckaert. He leaves his son, Prof. Carl E. Krill III of Ulm, Germany; his daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Gillis, and grandson, Jackson Gillis, all of Pittsburgh; brothers, Joseph J. (Sandra) Krill of East Brunswick, N.J., and Kevin B. (Mary Lynne) Krill of Mayfield, Ky.; sister, Roberta F. Hawkins of Akron; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Hummel Funeral Home, COPLEY, 3475 Copley Rd., TODAY, Monday, 18 January, from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Sebastian Church on Tuesday, 19 January, at 11 a.m. Private interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman will follow at a later date.

The family suggests memorials to the Krill Family Fund at St. Sebastian School or to a children's charity of the donor's choice.

Sorry for the late response but some how I missed this. He was a wonderful, kind man who touched so many lives. He saved my son when he was diagnosed at 16 with NHL. We were so sad when he left Children's but were fortunate when he came to Wooster to practice there and we could keep him as our Dr. He went above and beyond for his patients and their families. God bless you all. I am so sorry for your loss. RIP Captain Carl

I am so very sad to hear of Dr. Krill's passing. He was my hematologist/oncologist in the 1970's and saved my life after curing a Wilm's tumor I had as a child. I was in his care until my late teens, and often kept in touch with him into my early 20's. The last I spoke to him was over a year ago. He was going to look into the link between radiation treatments and basal cell carcinoma, as I've had recent run-ins within the radiated parts of my body. Due to my mom's illness I hadn't had time to get back in touch with him until today, when I found his obituary. My heart and prayers go out to his family. He was an amazing man and a true hero. He was still trying to help me as a 40-year old woman! There were so many times he comforted me and my family during my illness, and even cried alongside of them, and I will never forget him. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy in the lives of patients like me and I pray you all find the peace and comfort you deserve at this time. His dedication, compassion, kindness, and perseverance will be missed dearly. He was a wonderful man. ❤ I am so sorry for your loss.

Dr. Krill saved our son's life. Jim was diagnosed with neuroblastomo stage 4 s at four months old. No one thought Jim would survive the year; he is now 35.

Dr. Krill was an amazing man.

He was so caring and always made us feel like each patient was the only one he had. He was at the hospital at least twice a day and so insistent on excellent care.

Dr. Krill did Jim's chemotherapy injections each week himself, not allowing anyone else to do this.

His loss is profoundly felt.

Our prayers are with his family. Thank you for sharing him with us.

We are sorry for your loss. Dr. Krill saved my son, Noah. Noah was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. Because this form of cancer is rare in young children (age 3), Dr Krill developed a treatment plan, but warned us that he had less than a 5% chance of living 6 months! Well, Noah is now 41 years old! May God Bless Dr Krill and be with your family at this time of loss. Debi and Noah Sibbio.

It came to my attention that Dr. Carl Krill was a selfless and generous contributor to the Student Athletes at St. Sebastian School. It is with deepest sympathy that we as members of the St. Sebastian Athletic Booster Club recall and thank Dr. Krill for his service and support of the programs, specifically conducting sports physicals free of charge for the students. It is because of people like Dr. Krill, who established a foundation of service and volunteerism at the Booster Club that the group has grown to become one of the most admired grade school athletic support programs in North East Ohio.

In the summer of 1980, when I was still in high school with Chuck at Walsh Jesuit, I had surgery at Akron Children's Hospital. Even though it wasn't part of Dr. Krill's practice, he still took the time to check in with me to see how I was doing. It might seem like a small thing, but I believe a man's character is measured in small moments. And in the intervening 35 years, I always found Dr. Krill's character consistent: warm, kind, and thoughtful.

Dr. Krill saved our son's life when he was just 5 weeks old. He diagnosed and oversaw Josh's treatment for a hereditary blood disorder until Josh was 18. Josh is now 34 and healthy and the disorder which took the lives of a number of family members is better understood thanks to this brilliant, gentle man. Thank you, Doctor, for your care and concern for our family.

Dr Krill diagnosed and treated our eldest son back in 1973 for leukemia at Akron Children's Hospital. That was a disorder at that time that we did not know much about. We are so grateful to Dr Krill for his treatment because our son is now 47 years old and living a very normal life. He was one of a very view survivors back in that time. God bless and keep your Dad, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

It sadden me to see such a wonderful doctor has passed. I have known him since I was five. He saved my life.
