David Cannon Obituary

David Lee

Cannon

David Lee Cannon peacefully slept into the arms of his Lord and Savior and joined his beloved Lillian on June 30, 2016.

David Lee Cannon was born on January 31, 1925. He was the ninth of 13 born to the late Alfred Cannon, Sr. and Lucy Ann Graves Cannon of West Point, Mississippi. He grew up learning his father's trade of carpentry. After serving in the Army during World War II, David followed several of his brothers to Akron, Ohio, and was introduced to Lillian Ophelia Pulce. From his union with Lillian, David proudly fathered Portia Ophelia Cannon and Aleza Davette Cannon Beverly. He lived his life making sure they were well cared for, wanting for nothing, and unconditionally loved. He was a proud Pawpa to his grandchildren, Alexis Nicole Douglas, Steven David Beverly, and Jonathan Andrew Beverly. They too experienced his unselfish love. While he claimed many as his spiritual sons and daughters, his niece, Coretta Richardson, who he affectionately called "Sister" and her husband, the late Sargent Master Dennis Richardson, were considered his own.

David joined Robert Street Church of God in the late 50s and served on the Usher Board, Deacon Board, building and finance committees, under the pastorate of the late Rev. Robert Fowler; Pastor Laureate, Rev. Dr. Ronald J. Fowler; and Rev. Dr. Diana L. Swoope, his current pastor. He served well and deeply loved his church family.

After working for AT&T for 35 years, David retired but was never idle. Even in his later years when he could no longer build houses, do wood working, design and create beautiful clocks, keep his garden and his yard enviably immaculate, and meticulously stich masterpiece quilts, he sat in his easy chair and called that his work.

David was preceded in death by Lillian Ophelia Pulce Cannon, his loving wife of 62 years; his brothers and sisters, Willie Cannon, Alfred Cannon, Edward Cannon, Frances Craddock, Dimber Cannon, Roger Cannon, Flozell Hampton, Clarence Cannon, Annie Marie Horton and Dorothy Gibson. He is survived by his girls, his grandchildren, sister and brother, Lucille Scott and John Cannon; his God-daughter, Christine Fowler Quintero; and his special son, Kenny Robinson. He will be missed by his sisters-in-law, Frances Gowens and Mary Larkins; nephews and nieces, a host of other relatives, spiritual sons and daughters, and friends.

He lived well, loved well and will forever be remembered.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at the Arlington Church of God, 539 S. Arlington Street, Akron, Ohio, 44306, with homegoing service immediately following at 12 noon. Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery, 2589 Romig Rd., Akron, Ohio, 44320. Condolences may be sent to 281 Sundale Road, Akron, OH 44313.

Dear Family,
David and Lillian were our neighbors
for the 28 years we have lived on this
street. Better neighbors could not be had.
I loved stopping and talking with your father. I'm sure they are rejoicing in
heaven. Joy comes in the morning.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Cannon family at this time of loss. Mr. Cannon was our neighbor and we so enjoyed his friendly wave and occasional talks when he sat out in the summer.
He was a dear man and will be missed.
