Donald McIntyre Obituary

Dr. Donald McIntyre

Dr. Donald McIntyre, of Bath, peacefully passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at Pine Valley Care Center in Richfield, Ohio. He was born September 8, 1928, son of James and Annie (Thomson) McIntyre.

He spent his childhood in Detroit, graduating from McKenzie High School in 1945. He completed his undergraduate studies at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania and earned a PhD in Chemistry from Cornell University in 1953.

Donald served in the U.S. Army at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and was awarded a National Defense Service Medal. Upon return to civilian life, he worked at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington D.C. before moving to Ohio in 1966 to serve on the faculty of the University of Akron. In that role, he was a founding member of the faculty for the new Polymer Science Department created in 1968; while serving as the Department Head he participated in the development of a new building on the campus dedicated to the study of Polymer Science. Dr. McIntyre retired as Professor Emeritus in 1995.

Dr. McIntyre enjoyed travel, collaborating as a researcher and educator with colleagues around the world, and exploring National Parks with his wife. He was also an active member the Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron. Donald cherished classical music; he was a piano player from childhood and learned to play the cello as an adult. He inspired a love of music in his family and community.

Donald is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alison (MacArthur) of Bath, Ohio; children, Kerry of Bath, Ann of Camillus, N.Y. (Jeffrey Simmons), Ian of Akron, Ohio (Suzanne Winland) and Kirsty of Akron (Tracy Kinney); and brother, William McIntyre of Livonia, Mich. (Donna). He was also the proud grandfather of four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Hannah McIntyre, Janeen Elhassan and Robert Simmons.

My deepest condolences to the McIntyre family. As the siser-in-law to his daughter, Ann, I was privileged to meet Dr. McIntyre many times. My fondest memory was when he played piano at Ann and Jeff's wedding in Tully, N.Y. It was lovely!
