Edna Shapiro Obituary

Edna Sugar Shapiro

With a heavy heart we want to announce the sudden passing of Edna Sugar Shapiro on Sunday, September 4th.

Edna was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1925, to Mollie and Harry Sugar. On April 3, 1949, she married David Shapiro. This April, they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Edna and David lived and raised their family in Wooster, Ohio, then returned to Akron in 1985.

Edna was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Edna was an avid reader, bridge player and loved following current events. In her younger years, she was an excellent tennis player and championship golfer who achieved a hole-in-one. Edna was always involved in community organizations. She was an active member of Daughters of Israel, Hadassah, Temple Israel, Anshe Sfard and Fairlawn Country Club. Edna was a kind and generous woman and a supporter of many causes.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Mollie and Harry Sugar, and her brother, Dr. Ben Sugar. She is survived by her loving husband, David Shapiro; dedicated daughter, Barbara; devoted son, Mark (Nancy); and devoted daughter, Lynn Effron (Harvey). She is survived by her brother, Bill Sugar (Marilyn) and loving and devoted grandchildren, Katie Shapiro, Dr. Matthew Effron (Jaclyn), Mollie Koplin (Rick), and Tracy Effron. She also truly loved her granddogs, Bella, Gittel and Winnie.

The family would like to thank Edna's best friend and companion of 30 years, Doris Curry. Her love and knowledge enriched Edna's life, and we are eternally grateful for her friendship. A special thanks to Dr. John Kromalic and Bev for their compassionate care.

Edna will be deeply missed by her family and those who knew and loved her.

Per Edna's wishes, graveside services will be private. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 7th, at the home of Mark and Nancy Shapiro from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Israel or the Humane Society of Greater Akron.
