Edward Janiga Obituary
Eddie retired from the Barberton Police Department after a 35 year career and was a U.S. Marine Corps World War II veteran. A lifelong resident of Barberton, he touched many lives through coaching and organizing athletic programs.
Among his many awards were, VFW's Policeman of the Year in 1976, 1983 O.C. Barber Award and the 1995 Barberton Unsung Hero of Sports.
Eddie is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor; daughters, Jackie (Robert) Slater, Jeri (Thomas) Dubina and son, Jeffery (Terry); his loving grandchildren, Amanda and Jared Slater, Bryan, Kyle and Todd Janiga, Tyler, Justin and Mason Dubina and sister-in-law, Margie Janiga.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Wednesday 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Church. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday 5 to 8 p.m. at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, 566 W. Park Ave., Barberton 44203 and also on Wednesday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, where the procession will form for the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, 1815 W. Market St., Suite 301, Akron, Ohio 44313. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery with military honors by Firestone VFW 3383

My Grandpa, Eddie "Coach" Janiga, was one of the best men to ever live. Barberton born, he lived there his entire life touching the lives of anyone and everyone. He was a WWII Marine and then became a Barberton policeman. As a person he was the best friend anyone could ever ask for. He lived basically in my backyard and I would always go over to visit. I loved visiting him because he would not only always have something for me to eat but he would always be there to make me smile. He loved his entire family and loved the town of Barberton. He is the man that I strive to be. I could go on and on and on about all the different things he has done for this town and the people in it. He was a great man and will be truly truly missed. He was my #1, my buddy, my pal. He was my Grandpa and I am going to miss him dearly.

Mr Janiga was an awesome presence to a little 9 year old boy learning to play baseball. I never played for him but certainly respected playing against the teams he coached. He will be missed by many but those memories will never leave.

My grandpa, Edward "Coach" Janiga, was the best man I could have ever wished to meet, let alone him be my grandpa. These past days I have heard so many stories of him and his kindness. He was the best man in my eyes, there was no one better to walk this earth. He was funny and nice and everything between. He is a BIG loss to the world and I wish everyone could of met him, because they would have walked out a better person. He is my hero and everything more. I would like to thank everyone that came out to see him and everyone that kept him and his family in their hearts. That alone would have met a lot to him. God Bless.

To Jeff and the Janiga Family;
My deepest regrets on your recent loss. "Coach Eddie" was an outstanding role model for all of us kids. He taught us sportsmanship, discipline and most of all, how to distinquish between right and wrong.

Our sincere condolences to the Janiga family. Reading all these entries, we see the reoccuring "touched so many lives". This certainly describes Eddie Janiga. I am proud that Eddie knew how much he meant to me, let alone to the entire city of Barberton. He will be missed. Rest in Peace, Brother Janiga.

Dear Janiga Family, Such a wonderful man Officer J was to all who met him. So humble and kind. Our finest basketball seasons were the ones we spent sitting with Mr and Mrs J. I am so sorry for your loss, Eddie was a wonderful man, and a real winner!
I recently ran into him & Mrs. J in the Norton ACME, I heard and knew his voice after all of these years! It must have been God's gift to me to see him before he passed.
Eddie taught me how to be a team player, and how to be a winner! I will always be thankful for the many lessons he taught. He also taught me how to be respectful and a good sport if we lost, which was the larger gift!

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Janiga. It is amazing the amount of people Ed touched. As a young kid at washington elementry and later at U.L.Light, Police officer Janiga always made you feel special and not afraid to discuss any matter with him.. Mr. Janiga, Like so many of the men of his era for the city of Barberton, was a true Man with a great influence on many.

My prayers are with you. Mr. Janiga was a faithful husband, a great father, and a loving grandfather. Please know that Officer Janiga touched and shaped the lives of many, including me. Family was very important to him. For the seventeen years I worked with Jeri he treated me like family. When he stopped by to visit her classroom, he would also stop by and visit mine. (Little things that meean so much.) Coach Janiga was a man of character and integrity. The family has a rich legacy to uphold. May God continue to comfort you.

Mr Janiga was such a great man always caring and kind. I remember him as just a little girl when he was my truant officer,he truly touched lives of many . And Mr Janiga will never be forgotten as we celebrate a life well lived . God Bless the family and may God comfort you in your time of grief .

I was greatly saddedned to hear of Officer Janiga's passing. He was an influence in my life and have (as many people do) fond memories of him operating Safetytown. I will never forget him and his kindness and how he put up with the neighborhood "rats". Rest in Peace Mr "J"

Eddie was an extremely postive person and influenced the lives of many young people. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

I am indeed saddened by the news that Eddie has passed away. He always took great pride in cheering for the Purple & White. I will always feel it an honor to have known Eddie Janiga. Barberton has surely lost one of it's favorite sons.
