Harry O'Dell Obituary

Harry W. O'Dell M.D.

Harry W. O'Dell, M.D., 96, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2017.

Dr. O'Dell was a devoted and beloved husband, father and grandfather; an esteemed, dedicated and accomplished orthopedic physician and surgeon; an innovator of medical devices and procedures, a passionate educator, and a gentle, caring person who lived life to the fullest. In Dr. O'Dell's words, he has moved up to "The Great Cast Room In The Sky."

Born in Indiana, Dr. O'Dell earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Indiana University, a Master of Medical Science Degree from University of Pennsylvania and a Doctor of Medicine Degree from Indiana University. He completed his orthopedic residency at the Medical Center of New Jersey, University of Pennsylvania Graduate School and The Cleveland Clinic. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Camp Lee, Virginia.

Much of Dr. O'Dell's life was dedicated to his orthopedic medical practice, research and education, and the development of innovative medical devices and procedures. He was Chief of Staff at Akron Children's Medical Center (1972-1973) and Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Akron General Medical Center (1962-1974) where he was instrumental in elevating the division of orthopedic service to a full-fledged department. He was Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Northeastern Ohio College of Medicine and a member of the courtesy staff and teaching staff at Akron, Barberton and Lodi hospitals. Dr. O'Dell was a founding member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and he was inducted into Distinguished Physicians Society of Akron General Medical Center. He was also a member of numerous other professional associations.

Dr. O'Dell pioneered many procedures that advanced the field and practice of orthopedics. These included a new method of repair for recurrent shoulder dislocation that was first performed at The Cleveland Clinic in 1950; the development of a patented radio-osteometer, with Dr. Paul Wygand, which provided a new method of bone measurement; the establishment of protocol with Dr. Buel Smith for total joint surgery of the knee and hip; and the establishment of a Basic Science Program with Dr. Walther Hoyt for attending staff, resident staff and interns of Akron hospitals a program that continues to this day. In addition to these medical advances, Dr. O'Dell published numerous articles on orthopedic medicine, and in 1953, he co-authored and published a book titled, Recurrent Dislocation of the Shoulder.

Many honors and awards were bestowed upon Dr. O'Dell including the Distinguished Educator Award from Akron General Orthopedic Residents (1976), Akron General Residents Teaching Award (1982-1983), Akron City Hospital and Akron General Research Award (1989), Handicap Action Humanitarian Award (1986) and The Harry O'Dell Education Resource Center, dedicated by Akron Children's Medical Center Department of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery (1998).

Harry was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jo Ann. He is survived by his daughters, Ann of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Dr. Nancy of Akron; and his grandchildren, Samuel and Suzanne Dettling.

The family would like to thank the fabulous women who took such wonderful care of their dad and treated him like their own father.

My father, Dr. carl Krill SR., sent me to DR. Harry O'Dell . I had fallen and was in extreme pain. Dr. O'Dell
immediately diagnosed my broken back within 5 minutes. He stood behind me and moved me gently from side to side (I cried out each time.) He told me then which area it was in my back and then he X-rayed my back to show which bones were broken. I had more visits with him as he watched me healing through Xrays until all was healed. He said I had beautiful bones as I was young (mid 40s). I really enjoyed going to him.

Dr. O'Dell treated my knee when I injured it while hiking as a teenager. He was a joy and I always looked forward to my appointments as he was funny and so kind. My your family be enveloped by love, comfort, and peace as we celebrate his life and marvel at his legacy.

Your father was one of the first Orthopedic physicians I've had the pleasure to work with. I met him in 1980 as a new nurse on 5100 at Akron General. He was a true gentleman and wonderful physician. He will be missed.

Dear Ann & Nancy,
Your father treated four generations of my family for broken bones & fractures, etc. We all appreciated his expertise and kindness. He was the best! You may not remember me from Fairlawn Elementary & Firestone High School, Girls Scouts or riding bikes in the heights, but I thought the world of your dad. He saved my foot from amputation. I still have the implants that he put in my ankle area in Spring, 1994. He pushed me to surpass expectations for my recovery. Akron has lost another great human being. I am sending to you both (((hugs))) & blessings. Lovingly,

How blessed he was to have Terri Richards who loved him and cared for him as she had her own father...and his crew of caregivers...Lynn,Laura, Brenda, Melissa. He will be missed...

To his family.. Dr, Odell was a kind man. I am 70 years old and when I was 7 yrs old i contacted Polio in an Akron epidemic of the disease. I was totally paralyzed and scared, I still remember that young Doctor being gentle and kind. Him and Lewis Walker worked together to make me well again.
I saw him almost every single day for over 3 and a half months. Thank you Dr. Odell for being the brilliant Dr. That you were.

My father was Dr. Carl Krill Sr. who had the highest regard for Dr. Harry O'Dell as a person and a great Orthopedic surgeon. In 1982
on a Sunday morning I fell off my bike and injured my back. I knew not to move as I felt a crunch when I landed on the road.

Paramedics took me to the hospital where I had an X-ray. I was sent home with a pain prescription. I called my father who put me in touch with Dr. O'Dell at his office the next day. He took one look at me , stood behind me and moved my back carefully to the right then to the left --I screamed each time. He then said I have a fracture and told me where he thought it was. But he wanted to X-ray my whole back. There it was -just where he thought -- T 11. He had my driver take me to the hospital where he met us. He checked the hospital's X-rays . The ER had only X-rayed my lower back. He then ordered a special X-ray of my spleen because it was close to the fracture. No problem, and no cast or brace because my back was like a brace. He watched it carefully until I was discharged from his care.

Doctors are special people and Dr. O'Dell is at the top of the list of special Doctors!

May he rest in peace,

Roberta Krill Hawkins

My deepest condolences to your family regarding the passing of your father. Please know what a remarkable man and Doctor he was. When I was 10 years old, I had a freak accident that shattered my upper left arm. Conventional medicine at the time would have had it amputated. I, however, was lucky enough to have your Father as my Doctor. He refused to let that happen. In fact, he spent 4 years researching a way to save it. When I was 14, he performed one of the first bone grafts on me and saved my arm. The care did not stop there. He sent a graduation gift when I graduated high school as well. Your amazing father saved my arm and in turn allowed me to chase any dream I had. Without him, I would not have been able to achieve all that I have. I thank him from the bottom of my heart!

With deepest sympathies to your family, please know how much your father touched and changed lives! Sincerely, Michelle Wiltrout
