Homer Cross Obituary

Homer H. Cross

Homer Cross, 91, of Hudson and Deersville, Ohio passed away August 25, 2017. Homer was born May 29, 1926 in Sines, Maryland, to Arlie and Marie Cross.

He grew up in Stow and was a graduate of Stow High School. He attended Kent State University. Homer was an outgoing person who was always willing to help others. He always had a paper route when growing up. During the Great Depression he sold pies his mother baked to Civilian Conservation Corps workers. Homer served in the Marine Corps as Private First Class from April 21, 1944 to May 6, 1946. He was wounded during the Battle for Iwo Jima and is a Purple Heart recipient. After recovering from his wounds, he briefly served in Peking, China (the capital of China was called Peking before it was later named Beijing). He later attended many Marine Corps reunions and was the historian for the Third Marine Division Alumni Association. After the war, he married Irene Dacko of Hudson. During those years, he raised a family in Hudson and worked at the old Terex plant on Darrow Road. He retired as Maintenance Superintendent from Terex in the 1980's. On November 12, 1970 there was a massive and terrible explosion at the Fuel Gas Corporation in the center of Hudson. Firefighters and other first responders fought hard to minimize the destruction and loss of lives. There was a large propane tank on a railroad car close to the fire. Homer had a role to play that day. He used a large front end loader from Terex to pull the railroad car out of the fire zone. His participation in that event can be seen at minute eight in the following video: https://hudsoncommunitytv.viebit.com/player.php?hash=5wvWINIBvZBz .

Homer was always trying to invent things. He came up with idea for a popular safety design for a mailbox. He also invented a tangle resistant flag pole which he began manufacturing and selling under the name of Freedom Flag Company in Deersville, Ohio.

He was predeceased by first wife, Irene Cross and second wife, Jane Cross. For a number of years he lived in Deersville, Ohio. He served on the Deersville town council for several years. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jolanta Cross of Waco, Texas; son, Tom Cross of York, Maine; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Gary Brenner of Madison, Wisconsin; sisters, Arlene Shuman of Stow, Ohio and Jean Tice of Coventry, Ohio. He had three grandchildren, Katherine Cross, Karl and Kristen Brenner. Homer is also survived by Jane's children, son, Daniel Dolson of Cuyahoga Falls; son and daughter-in-law, David and Karen Dolson of Stow, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Don Hudak of Mason, Ohio.

My condolences to the family on the passing of Homer. My father, Siegfried Rettke, worked with Homer at Terex for many years, and I know they stayed in touch in the years after they'd both retired. Dad always spoke of Homer with much respect, and that spoke volumes to us kids. I remember Homer offering his log splitter when Dad and my brother felled several trees at our home, and Mom (Elfriede) has always remembered Arlene and spoken very highly of her as well.
May you all -each of you- find peace and comfort in the days to come, and may your memories and those of others ease your mourning.

To the Cross family, our deepest sympathy to your family. I remember Homer loving his sweet treats when we were together. I remember Homer coming to thanksgiving and special occasions and always sneaking an extra cookie or cupcake. He loved talking about his time in the Marine Corps and all his inventions. He will be greatly missed. Prayers to you and your families.
