Not sure what to say?

Linda Merryman

December 10, 2002

Hugs to you Briana, Jason, and all of Jim's family. No words can express my sorrow at his loss or my joy at having had the opportunity to experience Jim firsthand at his 50th. He made his mark in this world and Darkover. He was larger than life and will live on in our memories for a very long time.

It is with great saddness we lost Jim. His smile and intelligence will be with us through our grandson, Jason.

Dear Briana,

On behalf of the members of the Cuyahoga West Chapter, OGS who had the pleasure of having you and Jim at our October meeting, we send our sincere condolences. We were shocked into silence when we heard the sad news at our Nov. meeting. It's the loss of a member of the genealogical family of Northeast Ohio that is hard to take for every one who knew him. There must be work to do above that needs an expert historian and archivist. Please accept our sympathy.

Dearest Briana & Jason:

My contact with Jim was through Kent State. I graduated in 1999 at age 37 with a bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education and enough hours to minor in English thanks to Prof. Caccamo's inspiration. My fondest memory of him was when he was in front of the class reading aloud. His imagination and true love of literature and history would shine through along with his great sense of humor. I have a portfolio of all of the papers I wrote for him, and it is one of my dearest possessions. His comments challenged me and also lead me to believe in my talent. They are penned in his hand if you would like to have them or copies of them.

We also shared Jason stories-I have a son, also Jason, almost the same age as your Jason-Jim was so proud of you, Jason-never forget that! He lit up when he spoke of you.

My humble thanks for sharing him with me at Kent State as my teacher, and my sincere heart felt condolences for your loss. If I can ever be of help to you in any way I would be proud.

My sincerest condolences to Jim's family. I wish I'd had time to get to know him better. I knew him only through the Yahoo Groups Darkover RPG site, but I am not surprised to find out that he had been educated by the Jesuits--it showed in what he wrote.

November 14, 2002

Although I overlapped with Jim for a short time at Walsh Jesuit (I graduated in '72), I did not get to know him then. In fact, it wasn't until recently that I made real contact with Jim. He made a very favorable impression on my 9-year-old son at History Camp this summer. Jim made a point to tell us how bright he thought Adrian was. I also recently had occasion to ask Jim's assistance in doing some research in the Hudson archives. I was impressed by his enthusiasm and helpfulness on my project. He will be missed.

We were very sorry to hear of Jim's death. What a loss to the entire community. We came to know Jim through family research and Hudson History and also the Underground Railroad. Roy contacted Jim about 2 years ago to do a program at the Historical Society of Olde Northfield. It was one of the best programs we have had. He was a wealth of information, and will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and many friends.

When I was in Library School I worked at the Hudson Library and Historical Society with Jim. He was such a wonderful person to work with, and very knowledgable. Later, when I became the Local History person at Porter Library in Westlake Jim again was a generous resource regarding local history collection management. We can't even imagine at this point how much of a loss his death will be.

Kimberley MacDonald

November 12, 2002

I only knew Jim via his email posts in the online role-playing game based on Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series. He was a born storyteller, and I always looked forward to what he'd think of writing next. His tales were always full of wit and adventure and magic (especially Diego's adventures and the Darkovan Inquirer). Our game (and the world) is now much poorer without him. May this memory lighten grief ...

What a loss to the historical community..Mr.Caccamo was so helpful when I visited the Kent Historical Society, producing books for my research, and even finding the probable place of an ancestor's

residence by using his vast knowledge of the area and times.

Condolences to his family.

My deepest sympathy to Briana and Jason. I got to know Jim through the Know and Show Sheltie Club. Where I had alot of fun with all of you. I will miss Jim. He always had a postive attitude towards everything in life.

Sally Burnell

November 11, 2002

Jim's enthusiasm and interest in local history was infectious. You could not sit in the same room with him and hear him speak and not come away totally jazzed about what he was talking about. I had so looked forward to working with him on the new Kent Historic Preservation Society. His passing leaves a hole that is unfillable and I hope that someone can pick up his unfinished work and see it through to completion. A true light in NE Ohio has gone out, and there is a little more darkness now as a result. I will miss you a great deal, Jim. My prayers to his family, co-workers and other friends. Rest in peace.
