Joe L. Hammond

Joe L. Hammond, age 91, an Akron resident for over 70 years, passed away May 28, 2011 with his niece Eleanore and neighbors Bob and Sally Conley at his side.

Born December 5, 1919 to M.C. "Sid" and Essie M. (nee Williamson) (both deceased). Joe was the beloved husband of the late Helen (nee: Weese) for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles, Edward, Agnes Chipps, and Mary Webb.

Joe loved hunting and fishing and was a member of the "Roving Buckeyes" camping group. He and his wife Helen spent many days at Schultzes Lake in Atwater. He loved country music and was known to be a pretty good singer and player. Joe was also an avid Cleveland Indians fan, but his one true passion was auto body restoration. He began learning the trade at age nine and made it his career doing what he loved; working at various auto body shops retiring from Brown Street Autocraft.

Joe leaves behind his stepchildren Lois (Don-deceased) Griffin and Arden "Bud" (Luce) Weese. His brothers M.C. "Sid" and Raymond, 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends Thursday June 2, from 10am to 12 Noon with a service at Noon at the Catavolos Funeral Home 3653 W. Market St. Fairlawn. Burial will be in West Virginia.
