For a number of reasons it has been difficult for me to visit Arlington Nat'l Cem over the last several years, primarily due to a number of poor experiences i've encountered in the service myself. But regardless, Jon Grassbaugh is always remembered - as a hero, a friend, a defender of freedom, a testament to the best this nation has to offer. I know his legacy will live on and I promise he will always be remembered. it's a wonderful mild weekend here in the Mid-Atlantic, i know Jon knows how many are thinking about him on this sad, yet sunfilled weekend. Out of the sunshine rises Jon's impact and those he influenced. Edward Liu

Dear Jenna,

Although it had been years since I last saw Jon, I will always remember Jon's smile, his personality, and his outlook on life.

I know Jon loved you with every ounce of his being. I know it is hard for you, but take comfort in the fact that you two will be reunited for eternity.

I will always remember Jon and remember our time together as reenactors in the 28th Massachusetts, and although I lost contact him when he went off to high school and college, there will always be a special place for him in my heart and in my memory.

As Mark/Dad said, 4 years ago today we all gathered at Arlington to say our final goodbyes. Yet, as the last 4 years have passed, I realize there are no final goodbyes because you are always, always with us in all that we do. I only wish we could still reach out and touch you and hear your infectious laugh. I hear it in my memories and my thoughts all the time. We love you so very much and you will always live in our hearts. Thank you for all the joy and happiness you gave and continue to give us even now. You're our hero, baby.

Love you always and forever,

I still remember the day that I heard what happened to Jon. My unit had been in Kuwait for 3 days, waiting to go into Iraq. I had just been told by my wife that I would be a father, and the very next minute I received news about Jon. The juxtaposition of the two events was absolutely surreal. I have since gone to visit Jon at Arlington, but I have not been able to fully process it even to this day. I knew Jon very well in Korea and had the honor of his presence at my wedding. Jon was a great man, a great husband, and the consummate soldier. Not a day goes by that I do not think about him and how things just ended too soon for Jon. I hope these words do not seem too harsh or insensitive.

It's been over two years, and I've struggled wondering something else could have been done on 07APR07. I finally came to realization that I nor two medics on ground could have done anything differently. CPT. Grassbaugh is truly an American Hero. He (nor other members of 5-73, especially SFC Sebban) will never be forgotten. It was absolute privilege and honor to have provided CSC support for the Unit. I just wish outcome would have been different on that road. I finally shared with my son about the events on that day when I visited Arlington in January this year with my son. My son sees CPT Grassbaugh as his hero...

To the Grassbaugh Family,
There is hardly a day that goes by when I don't think of Jon and of all the fun times we shared together at Exeter and in DC. I remember him in the Prayers of the Faithful every Sunday when I go to Mass. I know he's still up there watching over us and I can never thank him enough for his sacrifice, giving his life up for his friends and untold numbers of strangers. Just wanted to let you know on this Memorial Day that I still remember and I will never forget.

To the family and friends of Jonathan.
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

Today, as the snow falls peacefully form the New Hampshire sky, I reflect with gratitude on the service and sacrifice of a local hero. The Hampstead community and local students have worked to memorialize Jon's life by dedicating the East Hampstead Post Office in his memory. The journey over the past year has proved to be an incredible experience for Hampstead students. These young people recognize the importance of honoring service and paying tribute to Capt. Jonathan Grassbaugh. The students' work to honor a soldier soon will become a reality when President Bush signs the bill started by their young political activism. Appreciation is expresssed to Senator John E. Sununu for whom Jon interned for sponsoring the post office bill intiated by Hampstead students.

Jon's memory will continue to inspire our youth and his legacy and spirit will always be remembered.

Jon's courage, dedication to our country, and his sacrifice for our democratic principles will forever live in our hearts.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Love Lives On

Those we love remain with us
for love itself lives on,
and cherished memories never fade
because a loved one's gone.
Those we love can never be
more than a thought apart,
far as long as there is memory,
they'll live on in the heart.

I wish I had the words to bring you comfort and peace. I know what you must be feeling, for my son Spc. Hoby F. Bradfield Jr. is at rest in Arlington.

Jonathan also served in 4-7 Cavalry in Korea several years after I did and was a rare Ranger-qualified Armor officer. Our deepest sympathies to all the Grassbaugh family. What a devastating loss. To Jonathan's parents: you should be rightly proud of your incredibly talented sons; you did a remarkable job rearing them. Jonathan, be thou at peace.

As a Veteran of the Regular Army I wish to express my condolences to the bereaved family of the late Captain Jonathan D. Grassbaugh. From what I have read, Captain Grassbaugh was a fine young man who had a bright future ahead of him. He was an outstanding soldier who attained the rank of Captain/03 at a very young age and would have accomplished even more if he had not suffered such an untimely death. It is always a tragedy when fine young Americans like Captain Grassbaugh are taken from us at such an early age. May this outstanding young American Soldier rest in peace with his comrades who preceded him in making the supreme sacrifice on behalf of our Republic.

Please accept our condolences in the loss of your son and husband. He had a sometimes thankless job, but made the ultimate sacrifice and for that we send you all of our prayers and well wishes.

And while a thank you probably doesn't make much of a difference now, we appreciate his life and what he sacrificed for this country.

To The Grassbaugh Family,
I am so very saddened by your loss. I know that no words will take away the ache in your hearts or the tears from your eyes, but maybe the thought of knowing just how proud every one is of your son, brother and husband will lift your spirits, even if just for a moment.
He will be missed every day and always remembered.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Grassbaugh familiy,
Jonathan was a friend of my son Allen Brown. Allen was in ROTC with Jon at Johns Hopkins and served with him in the Army. Jonathan has visited in our home and he attend our younger son's graduation from Basic Training in South Carolina.
My husband and I send our heartfelt sympathy for which no words adequately express how deeply we feel or can in any way assuage your grief.
Jon was indeed one of America's best and brightest. We honor his memory and grieve with you.
Please know that we are holding you in our prayers today and in the days to come.

When I'm Gone

When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile,
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned

Forget unkind words I have spoken;
Remember some good I have done.
Forget that I ever had heartache
And remember I've had loads of fun.

Forget that I've stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way.
Remember I have fought some hard battles
And won, ere the close of the day.

Then forget to grieve for my going,
I would not have you sad for a day,
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay,

And come in the shade of evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west
Stand for a few moments beside me
And remember only my best.

Your family is in our prayers;

Mr. & Mrs. Grassbaugh, words cannot express how deeply saddened we are to hear of your loss. We will always be appreciative to you and remember your kindness at the memorial service you held on 9/15/06 at the Hampstead Middle School for my nephew PFC. Matthew L. Bertolino, killed in Afghanastan on 2/9/06.

May the love and support of your family and friends (and of caring strangers) carry you through the difficult days, months and years to come. Your son and all of those that have gone before him, will be cherished for what they have given up for us. They will not be forgotten.
