Julie Davis Obituary

"Just because you fight doesn't mean you win, but it does mean you are a warrior" -- Julie Davis March 23, 2020 Julie Davis, 59, passed away March 26, 2020 after her courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 33 years, Mark Wayda of Columbus OH; her parents, Bob and Shirley Davis of Akron, OH; her brothers, Rob (Erika) of Hamilton, OH, and John (Rachel) of Wadsworth, OH; and countless friends. Julie grew up in Akron, graduating from Springfield High School class of '78. She graduated from John Carroll University earning a degree in economics. There she went on to attend and graduate from Ohio State University where she earned her Juris Doctorate degree. Upon finishing school, she and her husband Mark made Columbus there permanent residence where she had an exceedingly successful law career. Julie spent a lifetime fighting for women, workers, the poor and the hungry, lending her incredible energy to such organizations as the ACLU (state and national), The Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation, Franklin Park Conservatory Women's Board, Partnership for Excellence, National Abortion Rights Action League, CATCO, Portable Theater, The Clintonville Beachwood Community Resource Center (people won't soon forget the annual Julie Davis Birthday Golf Classic), and many more. Julie's spirit for life was evident from a very early age. In her youth, from playing guitar and singing at weekend church services, participating in Academic Challenge while in high school to biking, golfing, swashbuckling, her daily runs, running the Savage Race, entertaining her beloved friends with countless parties at their home, composing silly and fun songs and plays, or even curling, Julie was always up to a new adventure. Not to mention her talent for baking! No matter what the circumstances were, her positive approach, encouragement, and energy would always shine the light to the possibilities of optimism. Julie and Mark spent many years going to the New Orleans Jazz Festival where, through these years, developed many friendships and bonds. Falling in love with NOLA's music heritage and the life of the city, they decided to buy a second home there for their retirement. As it became clear what Julie was up against, it was determined that the best place for her to receive treatment was at the Ohio State Medical Center Arthur James Hospital. As a result of her 6 month treatment with these amazing healthcare professionals, Julie and Mark agreed the fight must continue against this horrible disease. Therefore they have announced a new named fund at the OSU Medical Center that will support these physicians as they battle head and neck cancer. In lieu of flowers or any other gifts or tributes, we ask donations be made to the Julie Davis "PIRATE QUEEN" Memorial Research Fund (316935) at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur James Cancer Hospital and Richard Solove Research Institute. Donations may be made online at give.osu.edu (just search the fund number listed above or "Pirate Queen" and her fund will come up) or by mail to P.O. Box 183112, Columbus, OH 43218. We appreciate you joining us in this fight. One of Julie's favorite authors, Walt Whitman, once said "Either define the moment or it will define you". Goodbye our beloved Jewel

Julie was my cousin whom I loved dearly. She was the most upbeat, generous, brilliant, fun-loving, sensitive person I've known. She was pure gift to us all, especially to her mom and dad. My heart goes out to Mark. I can't even imagine what his loss means to him who loved her so much. I can only thank God for Julie and the precious time she was with us.

I had to double check this obituary a few times to make sure it was the Julie Davis I knew. WOW. I had no idea she was battling anything. I worked with Julie on an OSBA presentation in January 2018 - so amazing, such energy. I am so very sorry for your loss and for the loss to our legal community. RIP Warrior.

Mark,
Thank you for sharing Julie with all of us. I remember our first days in law school. I was in awe of Julie. She was unique and had her own style, she was unafraid to be herself. I, on the other hand, intimidated, scared I wouldn't measure up. I remember Julie challenging the professors with her quick and brilliant intellect. She was special and made everyone around her feel comfortable and capable. She truly was one of a kind. And, it takes a special man to not only share her with all of us, but to be comfortable in his own skin that he can allow her light to shine with the brilliance God intended. She is greatly missed but her impact will be felt for a very long time. Funny, beautiful, brilliant, supportive and uncompromising in her beliefs - she made us all better. God bless you and grant you peace.

As a high school classmate of Julie's, there was no doubt that she would be one of the most successful in our class of 300-plus. And, quite simply that's what she was even in her shortened life.

Godspeed Julie... the stars are yours.

Dear family of Juli, it's hard to believe someone so full of life is no longer with us. It is said God takes those first. I pray her life remains an example of God's love and mercy to those left behind. How could we ever forget that smile. May God's peace and comfort be with you.

Hard to say what I will miss most about Julia. Maybe her Holiday cards. Maybe her kind soul. Maybe her wit and intelligence. One thing for sure, Julia is irreplaceable and her passing leaves a huge hole in my heart.

A verse that has always helped me in preparing for Eternity is found in the Book of Romans in the Bible. It says " For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord"(Roans 6:23). I hope that it helps you as much as it helps me.
May the Lord comfort you all in this time of loss.

I guess I should've tried getting in touch with you Julie several weeks ago when for some reason a glimpse and thought of you popped into my mind. I thought, "Gee, wonder what Julie's up to? I should try and track her down and find out how things are going....." Of course, that's not an uncommon thing to think when you have friends and are interested in knowing their activities since they'd impressed you in a memorable way during a time when you were regularly in contact back in the day at JCU. But this time, Julie- the timing of that thought was important. I didn't know you were not feeling your best. I just assumed you were. And why not? That's the way you were the last time we spoke on the phone and it's the way you were when Paty and I last saw you and Mark. Why should time have made a difference in how you were feeling? But we truly hope that NOW, as time continues, even in your absence that you are feeling your very best. Be well kiddo...you are and will be missed and I know that somehow, every now and again, your memory will be renewed and you'll for sure be doing well.
