LeRoy Martin Satrom

LeRoy Martin Satrom, 85, of Morris Road, Kent, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna.

He was born Feb. 4, 1919 in Galesburg, N.D., to Martin L. and Rose (Jon dahl) Satrom. He was grad uated from high school in Col gate, N.D., and was an U.S. Army veteran of the European Theater (1943 to 1946). He graduated from Case Institute of Technology with a degree in civil engineering in 1947. His career included Portage County Deputy Engineer (1947 to 1952); Design and Project Engineer for Havens & Emerson Consulting Engineers (1952 to 1956); Kent City Engineer (1956 to 1960), Consulting En gineer with offices in Kent, specializing in municipal, sanitary, and highway engineering (1960 to 1970); and four terms as Portage County Engineer (1973 to 1988). He was also presi dent of the County Engineers Association in 1983.

He also held positions as Kent City Service Director (1959 to 1960); Kent City Councilman (1964 to 1965); and Mayor of the City of Kent (1970 to 1972).

Survivors include his wife, Charlen F. (Shockey), whom he married Oct. 13, 1989; sons, Thomas L. Satrom of Clare mont, Calif., James R. Satrom of Encinitas, Calif., and Robert C. Satrom of Washington, D.C.; stepsons, Scott Jeffery of Sa vannah, Ga., Stuart Jeffery of Anchorage, Alaska, Matt Jeffery of Anchorage, Alaska,and Sean Jeffery of Anchorage, Alaska; stepdaughters, Ann James of Cedro Wolley, Wash., and Su san Fedemeyer of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; grandson, William R. Satrom; eight stepgrandchil dren, and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wives, Grace (May 11, 1974) and Arlye (March 31, 1987); by his parents; sisters, Elene Langdahl, Jundith Langdahl, Alice Bruil, and Flor ence Haugan; and brother, Donald Satrom.

Calling hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Cre matory in Kent. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ of Kent, with Dr. Paul Ashby and Rev. Brian Frederick-Gray officiating. Private burial will be at Highland Park Cemetery in Beachwood.
