Nicholas Alexander Obituary

Nicholas Alexander

Nick completed his journey home after a short and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on September 21, 2013.

Nick was born in Akron to Carmen and Dominic Alexander on November 7, 1950. A graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School and John Carroll University, Nick was the former owner of Alexander Body & Fender. For the last eight years, he enjoyed working at DeVitis Italian Market, greeting each customer as if they were a friend. In fact, everyone who met Nick became his friend.

Nick showed quiet and humble generosity to his community. He was an active member of St. Anthony Church; many will fondly recall Nick serving up spaghetti dinners and his homemade wine in the church basement. He also volunteered in CYO athletics, coaching his daughters' sports teams throughout their elementary years at Our Lady of the Elms.

Nick loved to travel, and discovered a renewed appreciation of his Italian heritage after several trips to Italy. He also learned the art of wine making, which became a life-long hobby. He enjoyed gardening, nurturing his fig trees, and playing bocce. Nick showed all who came in contact with him that kindness and respect are keys to harmony, and that there is much to enjoy in the simple acts of spending time with family, sharing a good meal and laughing often.

Nick is both mourned and celebrated by his devoted wife, Joyce and his daughters, Giamarie (Frank) Zagacki, Cristina (Robert) Scarlatelli, Lauren Alexander and two beautiful granddaughters, Olivia and Luciana Zagacki. Nick also leaves behind his loving mother, Carmen Alexander; brothers, Frank (Donna), Michael (Lori) and Dominic; sister, Rebecca Godbee; sister-in-law, Jayne Sassano; brothers-in-law, Dr. Joseph Sassano (Kelly) and Dr. John Sassano (Kelley); and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Joseph Koenig, Mike Klein, Sandy Hodge and Kim and her staff at the Summa Infusion Center. A special thank you to Nick's best friend Jeff for never missing a Tuesday chemo session.

In a fast-paced world, Nick understood the importance of slowing down enough to become an active part of a family, faith and community. He will always be missed and always loved. He is finally sitting on that big front porch in heaven smoking his Avanti cigar with his father-in-law, Joe Sassano, Uncle Angie, Uncle Roxy and Armando Manno.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 25, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 83 Mosser Pl., Akron. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial calling hours will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 24, at Hennessy Funeral Home (formerly Rossi) 552 N. Main St., Akron. Donations may be made to St. Anthony Church or to the American Cancer Society.

I worked with Nick at North Akron Savings and Loan back in the late 70´s. I always looked up to him as a mentor and a friend. He was the first person in my life to ask my opinion and be interested in my answers. Now in my late sixties, he is one of the very few people I came across in my life that wished I had grown old knowing as s friend. I´m so sorry he passed, the world needs more people like him

I am very sorry to hear about Nick's passing. I roomed with him at John Carroll University for three years. He was a genuine and generous guy, always ready to laugh at even the worst joke. He loved his family -- I especially remember him telling me about the great Italian meals his Mother would cook at Christmas. I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers.

When Nick was still running the body shop I'd see him at Devitis'Market and tell him he should retire and come work with us at the store.I think he was glad when he finally was able to do just that. For someone who was so proud of his Italian heritage, Devitis was the perfect place to "semi-retire"- although he worked so hard I don't know if I can properly call it "semi" retirement! All of us at Devitis loved Nick and we always will remember him.My condolences to all of Nick's family- he was as good as they come. Ciao',Nick, ci vediamo in Paradiso.

To Joyce and the Alexander Family:
Joyce, unfortunately I will not be able to attend calling hours and services tomorrow; however, I just wanted to express my sympathies on Nick's passing and the loss that we all are going to feel. On the other hand, I can sit back and smile as Nick is one of the true gentlemen that I have met in my lifetime who truly embraced the Italian lifestyle after he sold the business. Every time I saw Nick at St. Anthony's or DeVitis, we talked about our trips and our mutual love of Italy. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

JOYCE AND DAUGHTERS, I KNEW NICK FROM MANY DIFFERENT ASPECTS. 1ST AS A BUSINESS OWNER THAT MY LATE HUSBAND AND I TOOK OUR CARS TO WHEN THEY NEEDED REPAIRED AFTER HAVING BEEN INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS FOR WHATEVER REASON. 2ND, AS A FORMER 'ELMS' STUDENT AND NOW FOR MANY YEARS AN ALUMNI OF THE 'ELMS, CLASS OF '55. 3RD, AS A GENTLE SOFT-SPOKEN GENTLEMAN AT ST. ANTHONY CHURCH ALSO AN EMPLOYEE AT DEVITIS ITALIAN MARKET. I WILL TREASURE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE THE FINAL CONVERSATION I HAD WITH NICK AFTER SUNDAY MASS NOT LONG BEFORE NICK WAS TAKEN FROM EVERYONE THAT KNEW AND LOVED HIM IN THEIR OWN WAY. WE TALKED FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND THEN HE SAID, 'I'M GETTING THE SIGN FROM MY WIFE THAT WE REALLY HAVE TO GET ON OUR WAY.'
WE SAID OUR GOOD-BYES AS HE WALKED ME TO MY CAR. LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME I WOULD SEE AND TALK TO NICK BEFORE GOD CALLED HIM HOME TO HEAVEN. YOUR 'FAMILY BOOK OF MEMORIES' MUST BE TOTALLY OVERFLOWING WITH MEMORIES OF YOUR LIFE TOGETHER AND THOSE OF RAISING YOUR DAUGHTERS. GOD WILL BRING YOU THROUGH THIS SAD TIME AND REPLACE IT WITH ALL THE MEMORIES THAT NICK AND YOU MADE OVER YOUR LIFETIME TOGETHER.
REST IN PEACE, NICK BECAUSE YOU HAVE EARNED THAT RIGHT. GOD MADE THE DECISION THAT YOU HAD SUFFERED LONG ENOUGH FROM THE CANCER THAT AFFLICTED YOUR BODY. I KNOW YOU WILL WAIT PATIENTLY FOR THE TIME THAT YOUR FAMILY WILL EVENTUALLY JOIN YOU IN GODS HEAVENLY HOME.
JOYCE, MY PRAYERS WILL CONTINUE FOR YOU AND THE GIRLS.
