Shirley Christopher Obituary

Shirley A. Christopher

On a brisk October morning, Shirley A. Christopher began her journey on earth in Akron, Ohio.

She was welcomed by her loving and devoted parents, the late Lameus Christopher, Sr. and Thelma Jackson Christopher. Following a brief stay at Akron General Hospital and four hours at Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service surrounded by her dear sister, Delores (Nathan) Campbell; her loving aunts, Dorothy O. Jackson, Annie Stills, and Edna Fitzpatrick; cousins, Elder Charles Bell, Opal Green, Karen Ford; special friend, Harry Rogers, and nurse Jody, she peacefully went home to be with the Lord as they sang hymns of the church.

Shirley, a fun loving child, attended and graduated from Robinson Elementary School and East High School. She was very active with Jr. Y-Teen, Red Cross, Sr. Y-Teen, F.H.A., Senior Committee and Advance Chorus, and was nicknamed ""chick."" She loved sports and enjoyed spending time at the Urban League where she was a member of the Girl Scout Troop. Shirley worked at the YWCA as a secretary and enrolled at the University of Akron graduating with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. In retrospect, her childhood was pregnant with possibilities of her working with children in some capacity, including children with special needs. Her nurturing was obvious as a child. As children were born into her extended family, she was the baby sitter. Shirley and the children were mutually attracted to each other. The highlight of her college career was her student teaching experience with first graders. It was thoroughly enjoyable! One of her classmates couldn't believe she was having so much fun! Following her student teaching experience she was offered a job working in the same building, Leggett Elementary School where she was trained. Shirley and her cousin Terracita Stills Nunn relocated to Washington D.C. in 1968. She furthered her education at Catholic University Special Education, Prince George Community College, masters degree in guidance counseling from Trinity College, a masters from Maryland State Department of Education, and Prince George Community College. Shirley was a teacher at Anne Beers Elementary School, and was a Counselor at Robert Brent Elementary School and at J. Frank Dent Elementary School. Her love for children was so great that she wanted to have them visit her home town of Akron. She always inspired excellence and started her children with pen pals with the late Mrs. Carolyn Reed's students and what a wonderful experience it was for these children to spend a full day of fun visiting Akron. Shirley later worked as a special education teacher at Suitland High School, Prince George Community College, Summer School charm classes and arts and crafts. While living in Washington, D.C. Shirley was a member of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Grainger Browning and Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning. Shirley was a member of the adult choir for over a decade. In addition to her teaching career Shirley was a realtor at Long & Foster Realtors, sales consultant for Bernie Schultz Realty, Realtor Realty Executives, and sales manager for Pettit & Griffin, Inc. Builder/Developer. Shirley received numerous awards. She returned to Akron following her retirement and was a member of the Arlington Church of God where she sang in the senior choir. Shirley was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Zeta Theta Omega Chapter. Shirley was one of ten charter members of Delta Pi Chapter which is located in Akron. She became a member on April 15, 1961. Delta Pi Chapter was the first black sorority formed on the campus of The University of Akron. When she lived in Washington D.C. she held membership in XI Omega Chapter. Shirley had been a AKA for 45 years.

Preceded in death by her father, Lameus Christopher, Sr.; sister-in-law, Clydie Christopher; nephews, Darrell Campbell and Anthony Christopher; maternal uncles, William Jackson, Jr., Jasper Jackson, Berman Stills; aunt, Lucille Jackson, and cousins, Brenda Kay Fitzpatrick Howard and Donna and Elijah McLin. With fond memories Shirley leaves her mother, Thelma Christopher; sister, Delores Louise (Nathan) Campbell; brother, Lameus Christopher, Jr.; aunts, Edna (Nolen) Fitzpatrick, Annie Stills, Dorothy O. Jackson and Gert Hoffman; nephews, Eric (Margaret) Campbell, Terrance (Jackie) Christopher, Aaron, Kevin, Ronald, Michael, and Gregory Christopher; nieces, Eva Christopher, Virginia Campbell, Marilyn King-Malachi (Kevin), Regina King-Williams (Curtis), Bertina King, and Carolyn King; her loving cousins, Saundra Foster, Terracita (James) Nunn, Errol (Saundra) Fitzpatrick, Renee (David) Aniere, Tracey Mobley, Lambert and Lawrence McElrath, Tammy (Dr. Aaron) Barkley, Lisa & Liana Brown, Anja Aniere, Taylor and Aaron Barkley, Errol Nolen Fitzpatrick; cousin & goddaughter, Krystal Nunn, Kimberly and Raynaldo Daniels, Jr., Kierra and Raynaldo Daniels, III, Mia (Stan) Hodge, Mia Pierce, Mathew Pierce, James Toles, Sandee Davidson, Opal Green, Elder Charles (Ceola) Bell and Elzena (James) Ward; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007 at 12 p.m. the Arlington Church of God, 539 S. Arlington, Akron, OH 44307, Dr. Ronald J. Fowler, Senior Pastor officiant. Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

To the Christopher family and others. After having moved from Akron many years ago, my wife and i had on many ocassions wondered what had happened to Shirley and voila. We are saddened about her departure, but glad that she crossed over to Jesus' prepared place for her; a place where there is no sickness, nor sorrow, just joy and jubilee. Family members, Be Blessed. To the family of Shiley Christopher...Recently I heard a sermon about passing to the other side...The point was made "It's OK
to let someone go...It's hard to let someone that had such a "calming spirit" to go I have fond memories of Shirley helping me put up my fruit border in my kitchen as
I did a few Spring household changes...We shared so MANY CALM
times together talking, eating out, and at each others home...
It's OK to let Shirley go...I hope to see her singing someday....

To the Christopher family, Terri Nunn and other family members, I just want you to know that Shirley was truly special! She stood out physically as well as her elegant demeanor that she was known for, but more importantly -- her inner beauty and calming spirit was always present. As a fellow choirmember in the alto section of the Adult Choir, she always carried herself in a pleasant and professional way. I will miss that about Shirley. May the Lord bless and keep you, and give you comfort. My prayers are with you.

I AM SADDENED BY THE NEWS OF SHIRLEY'S DEATH. SHE AND I SPENT MANY EVENINGS SITTING TOGETHER AT CHOIR REHEARSALS AND BECAUSE WE WERE TWO OF THE TALLEST CHOIR MEMBERS, WE USUALLY HAD TO LINE UP FOR THE PROCESSIONAL TOWARDS THE END OF THE LINE, MEANING THAT A HUNDRED MEMBERS OR SO HAD TO MARCH IN BEFORE US.. THE LONG PROCESSIONAL WOULD GIVE US A LOT OF TIME TO CHIT CHAT BEFORE WE MARCHED IN! SHE LOVED THE ADULT CHOIR AND WAS A FAITHFUL MEMBER FOR SO MANY YEARS. ALWAYS A WARM FRIENDLY SMILE AND EVERY HAIR ON HER HEAD HAD TO BE IN PERFECT PLACE! SHE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TO ADORN A FULL HEAD OF SILVER HAIR ..PROBABLY WHEN WE WERE STIL CALLED "THE YOUNG ADULT CHOIR" ..AND WE ALL ADMIRED IT'S BEAUTY. SURELY SHE'LL BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ANGEL SINGING IN THE HEAVENLY CHOIR!

I KNOW YOU WILL MISS HER BUT FIND COMFORT IN KNOWING THAT SHE LOVED THE LORD AND HAS BEEN SENDING UP HER TIMBER TO BUILD A NEW MANSIOIN FOR THIS APPOINTED TIME. THAT BEAUTIFUL SILVER HAIR THAT WAS HER CROWN AND GLORY HAS NOW BEEN ADORNED WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CROWN OF ALL ...PRICELESS AND DESIGNED ESPECIALLY FOR HER BY HER HEAVENLY FATHER. I CAN HEAR HER SINGING IN HER NEW CHOIR ROBE AND NEW CROWN, "I'VE GOT A NEW HOME, UP HERE IN GLORY..AND IT'S MINE, MINE, MINE.

MAY GOD DISPATCH THE COMFORTER TO HER BIRTH FAMILY AND HER EBENEZER FAMILY. SHE WILL BE REMEMBERD AND SORELY MISSED.

To the Christopher and Nunn family.
I am a member of the Adult Choir of Ebenezer AME Church, where Shirley served as a dedicated and faithful fellow-alto, for many years. I will always remember Shirley as being quiet natured but very pleasant, with so much elegance and grace. Please know that you have my deepest sympathy and that my thoughts and prayers are with you as you celebrate the life of our beloved Sister Shirley. May God bless, strengthen and keep you now and in the days that are ahead.

I met Shirley years ago through her cousin Terri Stills Nunn. We have been friends every since. Shirley was a very "classy lady" and always a lot of fun to be around. She would always say things that would keep me cracking up. We wouldn't talk sometimes for months and then when we did talk it would be for hours.

My husband, Frank, and our daughter, Alexis, extend our deepest sympathies to the family. Shirley will be sorely missed, but she is at peace now.

My condolences to the family & friends of Shirley Christopher upon her recent passing, but I know she is resting in the Arms of God. Shirley was a faithful Adult Choir member for many years who always carried herself with elegance and poise. She stood out for many reasons and I always enjoyed the conversations we had, not only at rehearsal but choir- traveling events also. We had a long talk before she relocated to Ohio and she was very happy to be returning home. Please know that she is at peace in Glory.

As young women, I always admired Shirley and wanted to be just like her when I grew up. She was so graceful and”‘ together” in her appearance and demeanor. Even so, I had no idea what a wonderful woman she was until she returned to Akron & I got to know her better. She did NOT disappoint. My impressions of her were correct. She was wonderful in appearance, in spirit, and in deed. I will miss her. I will also pray earnestly for the family.
With Much Love,
Enid Anne Williams.

To the Christopher and Nunn families, "Aunt Dorothy" and others,
Please know that my husband, Billy and I, sincerely pray that God will strengthen and comfort you during yet another loss in your family.
Shirley was truly one of a kind and will be missed. She was one of the most modest, elegant ladies I knew. While she was quiet to strangers, everyone knew when she entered a room. Her presence was heightened not only by her physical appearance but by her understated elegance.
As we jouneyed on our spiritual road together, it was Sister Shirley who would get so filled up that the tears would fall every time she entered the Sanctuary. She would dab her eyes as she embraced the presence of the Holy Spirit. What a gift.
Shirley's course is finished and I know that she has received her crown.

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord!

Words seem so inadequate when the life of someone dear to us has ended on earth. It is at that moment in time, that we find ourselves searching for something different to say. It is a time that we begin to do a self inventory and make one other promise to draw closer to God (which is a place to be at all times.) 10 years ago when my late husband went to be with the Lord, it was Shirley who was with me from the time I received my emergency call until that final moment. Every step of the way, she was there. When I needed to be reminded to put my faith in gear during that time, it was Shirley who helped me to remember what faith requires of us. Everyday until she moved, I always reminded her of what a priceless sacrifice that was. I will always remember our days in the choir, when we would laugh and chat and "Precious Jewel" (Cousin Teri) would remind us to be quiet. Certainly my prayers are with the family, friends, Sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and extended family of my friend, Soror and Sister in Christ Shirley who completed her journey here on earth. May our memories of laughter, beautiful conversations and our faith be the clothing that will cover us at this difficult time.
